Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken Travel to Spain, Italy, the Holy See, and Turkey July 27 - 31

Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel next week to Spain, Italy, the Holy See, and Turkey to discuss key political, economic, and security issues with a wide range of government officials and non-governmental experts. In particular, the Deputy Secretary will discuss the progress and challenges in our global, coordinated efforts to counter violent extremism and prevent foreign terrorist fighter recruitment that were agreed to at February’s White House Summit to Counter Violent Extremism.

On July 27-28, Deputy Secretary Blinken will meet with senior government officials in Madrid and attend a UN Counterterrorism Committee meeting with Member States and international organizations on “Stemming the Flow of Foreign Terrorist Fighters” hosted by Spain. While in Madrid, the Deputy Secretary will also meet with entrepreneurs to discuss efforts to increase economic opportunities in Spain.

Deputy Secretary Blinken will travel to Rome on July 28-29 to meet with senior government officials to discuss a range of bilateral and global issues including energy security, Libya, Ukraine, and migration. The Deputy Secretary will also visit the Holy See to meet with senior Vatican officials. On July 29, Deputy Secretary Blinken will co-host a meeting on countering violent extremism with Italian Minister of Interior Angelino Alfano. While in Rome, the Deputy Secretary will also meet with energy officials and alumni from U.S. exchange programs.

On July 29-30, the Deputy Secretary will travel to Milan to visit the U.S. pavilion at the Milan Expo and meet with senior business officials. He will highlight the outstanding work of the State Department, USAID, and private donors to promote U.S. efforts on food security and resilience around the world through the pavilion’s numerous exhibits.

Deputy Secretary Blinken’s final stop will be in Ankara on July 31 to meet with senior government officials and civil society representatives to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues.
