Disappointment in Conviction of Rafael Marques

Press Statement
Jeff Rathke
Director, Office of Press Relations
Washington, DC
May 29, 2015

The United States is deeply disappointed by the conviction of Rafael Marques for libel, and is concerned about the negative impact this decision will have on the freedoms of expression and press in Angola.

We urge the Government of Angola to respect its citizens’ constitutional right to freedom of expression and end prosecutions against those who exercise this right.

Respect for human rights and good governance is a core value of the United States. We have regularly made clear our concerns on human rights, press freedoms, governance, and corruption to the Angolan Government, and will continue to do so as part of our ongoing bilateral dialogue.
