Ambassador William R. Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), will travel to Atlanta, Georgia on June 1 to launch the Department’s first-ever formal partnership with a public defender, meet with Mayor Kasim Reed, give public remarks on drug policy, and advance INL cooperation with Atlanta’s police chief. Under the new partnership with the Atlanta Judicial Circuit Public Defender Vernon, the Department of State will utilize the experience of the public defender and his staff to train and advise partner nations on justice sector reform. Ambassador Brownfield will speak on international drug policy at the “Atlanta Global Health Summit” sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Atlanta. He will also meet Atlanta Chief of Police George Turner to discuss how to further strengthen the Department of State’s partnership with the Atlanta Police Department. Officers from the Atlanta Police have worked with the State Department in East Timor, Pakistan, and Central America.
