Brownfield to Mexico and Guatemala Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC March 1, 2016 Ambassador William R. Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), will travel to Mexico City, Mexico, to conduct bilateral meetings and discuss shared security, rule of law, and counternarcotics challenges with Mexican officials. Ambassador Brownfield plans to meet with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Office of Prosecutor General (PGR). Assistant Secretary Brownfield will then travel to Guatemala, where he will participate in a ceremony highlighting the State Department’s continuing contributions to the historic work done on behalf of accountability in Guatemala by the United Nations’ International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). The United States is proud to be the largest single contributor to CICIG. Also participating in the ceremony will be U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala, Todd Robinson, CICIG Commissioner Ivan Velasquez, Guatemala Attorney General Thelma Aldana, and UN Development Program representative Valerie Julliand. Since 2008 the United States has invested more than $36 million in the essential work of CICIG, whose purpose is to end the pervasive corruption that has existed in Guatemala. In collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General, and with input from Guatemala’s active civil society, CICIG’s work has produced real results, demonstrated that no one is immune from the law, and has included successful indictments and prosecutions of individuals at the highest levels of government. Assistant Secretary Brownfield will also visit the Juvenile Justice Pre-Trial Alternative Measures Program, implemented by the National Center for State Courts through an INL Regional Grant. The program promotes the use of alternative measures during pretrial to reduce the number of low risk juveniles in detention. Assistant Secretary Brownfield will also meet with Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, cabinet members, and other officials to discuss bilateral programs and activities.
