Fulbright Students from 75 Countries Convene in Washington, D.C. to Explore Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) will welcome 137 first-year Fulbright foreign students from 75 countries and eight Fulbright U.S. student alumni, April 2–6, 2014, for a Fulbright Enrichment Seminar on “Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation.” During the seminar, Fulbrighters will explore the efforts of governments, organizations, and individuals to develop innovative solutions to local, national, and global challenges using principles of social entrepreneurship. The four-day event in Washington, D.C. is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) on behalf of the Department of State.

Thursday, April 3
Keynote address by Alex Counts, President and CEO of the Grameen Foundation, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Downtown Hotel (999 9th St NW).

Thursday, April 3
Panel discussion entitled “Social Innovation - Creativity Driven Impact” from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Downtown Hotel featuring:
• Robert M. Tomasko, Director of the Social Enterprise Program, American University;
• Kim Lucas, Bicycle Program Specialist, District Department of Transportation;
• Mark Hecker, Executive Director, Reach Incorporated; and
• Mike Curtin, Chief Executive Officer, DC Central Kitchen.

Friday, April 4
Community service activities with Fulbright students from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at various sites.

Saturday, April 5
Innovative Thinking Workshop from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Downtown Hotel.

On Saturday, the Fulbright students will also have the opportunity to attend the TEDxFulbright 2014 Lunch and Social Innovation Competition from 12:00 to 2:30 p.m. at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (1615 H Street NW).

The Washington, D.C. Fulbright Enrichment Seminar is one of nine enrichment seminars hosted across the United States by the State Department as part of its flagship Fulbright Program. These enrichment seminars, an integral part of the Fulbright experience, benefit first-year Fulbright foreign students and support the overall mission of the Fulbright Program.
