Katika kuelezea sababu ya kujiuzulu kwake papa Benedict amesema maneno yafuatayo:

ndugu zangu tunahangaika kubuni majibu kwa nini astaafu wakati mwenyewe ameweka bayana afya, na umri ndio sababu kubwa.hayo mengine ni mchezo wa maigizo kwa walio wana kanisa kwani hayana tija wala mashiko.
  mwenye kuujua ukweli wote ni yeye na amesema!kwa nini tunalazimishia vijisababu vingine. mimi nauita huu ni unyenyekevu wa hali ya juu na huu utamfanya afike mbinguni mapema sana.
  kwetu sisi tujifunze kwake, tusiwe ving'ang'anizi wa madaraka. kama umefikia umri wa kustaafu ondoka bila kuulizwa. hata huko nyumbani umeshakuwa mzee huwezi kuiongoza familia bado unashikilia mimi nimesema. hatufikishi jamii kunakatakiwa. huu ni mfano sio wa wale walio na ofisi za huduma tu au ktk familia zetu.
  huwezi hilo subiria kufia ofisini kwa aibu zako ukiogopa watasema nimeshindwa...kukubali ukomo ni busara.
