Canada Day

Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
June 30, 2015

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the Canadian people on the 148th anniversary of the birth of your nation on July 1.

The United States and Canada share a common democratic heritage, a fact I was reminded of last year when I visited Ottawa.

Days after the senseless shootings there, I met with Prime Minister Harper, then-Foreign Minister Baird, and leaders on Parliament Hill to express solidarity on behalf of the American people who mourned alongside all of you.

As I looked at the bullet holes left in the walls of your Hall of Honour, I was reminded of the bonds that unite us — democracy, freedom, rule of law, and equality.

Earlier this year, I was pleased to return the hospitality by hosting both Foreign Minister Baird and Mexican Foreign Minister Meade in Boston for the North American Ministerial. We discussed how to deepen economic integration, advance robust climate change policy, and create a prosperous energy future for North America.

I have enjoyed my time working with Foreign Minister Nicholson, especially on Arctic Council issues when I visited Iqaluit earlier this year.

Our two countries collaborate on trade, regional economic cooperation, and a host of global issues from our response to Ebola, security cooperation in Iraq and Afghanistan, and engagement in the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL.

We count Canada not just as a friend, but a vital partner.

As you gather with friends and family, I wish you a Happy Canada Day.
