[wanabidii] English Grammar

An interesting question came up at my Saturday Immigrant English Class.

Let me relate it.

Let's say yesterday, Warsama said:  "I'm not a thief, I'm just a liar"

Now you're reporting this to someone today. How would you put it?

Here are 2 choices:

1.  Warsama said he is not a thief but just a liar.

2.  Warsama said he was not a thief but just a liar.

Which of those 2 statements would be grammatically correct when reporting Warsama's past statement?

Courage
