Press Releases: Full Court Press to Empower Women and Girls through Sports: U.S. Department of State Multi-Nation Final Four Basketball Program 04/01/2014 02:45 PM EDT Full Court Press to Empower Women and Girls through Sports: U.S. Department of State Multi-Nation Final Four Basketball Program Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC April 1, 2014 The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announces the Multi-Nation Final Four Basketball Sports Visitor program from March 30-April 9 in Tennessee. In a continued effort to empower women and girls through sports worldwide, events have been designed around the Women’s NCAA Final Four Championship. Every region of the world is represented: Argentina, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Republic of Korea, and Turkey. Under the Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative, this program will build on the momentum of Women’s History Month by emphasizing the universal lessons of Title IX and the contributions that female athletes have made to society. The program begins at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Participants will tour the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and learn with their American peers about team-building, disability sports, and the value of education. On April 3, U.S. Department of State Senior Advisor Michelle Kwan, five-time World Figure Skating Champion and two-time Olympic medalist, will meet the group and deliver remarks on the importance of international people-to-people exchanges and the hard work needed to succeed at the University of Tennessee’s Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy. The program wraps up in Nashville with community activities coinciding with the NCAA Final Four. The sports initiative is comprised of three exchanges: Sports Visitors, Sports Envoys, and the cornerstone, the U.S. Department of State and espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program.
