I think they say w-a-k and w-a-d
My primary school teacher would say M-I-N-A-T for Minute. Completely wrong.
M-I-N-I-T is the correct way.Let's just do this for fun and not take things very seriously. Learning while having fun is the key hear.

Well Courage that is english and I think we need to pronounce an english word in english and not in Kiswahili. Ok there is a dictionary I normally refer when I want to be clear with pronunciations of some different controversially pronounced words. As you know we in East Africa we have different pronunciations of word depending on where we come from. Like Kenyans and Ugandans have more or less similar pronunciations of some words which is a bit different from Tanzanians. Tanzanians mostly pronunciations have similarities with Zambians, Malawians, and most of other Southern Africa countries. For instanceKenyans and Ugandans will pronounce WORD and WORK as W-A-D-I and W-A-K-I while Tanzanians, Zambians, Malawians will pronounce them like W-E-D-I AND W-E-K-IOn the same note Ugandans will pronounce the word MINUTE as M-I-N-A-T-I while Tanzanians will pronounce it like M-I-N-I-T-I.Now can you clarify these differences in pronunciations where do they come from while we were all under British colonial rule?KenOn 23 June 2013 15:11, Maurice Oduor <mauricejoduor@gmail.com> wrote:

Pizza is an Italian word so I try to use Kiswahili to illustrate (mimic) how Italians I see in Toronto pronounce it.Kenneth,I think you're on the right track. I try to use Kiswahili as best as possible to get the pronunciation. If you have a better system then by all means let us know. I'm always willing to learn.
If you say that Weapon can also be w-e-p-en (or wep-uh-n), I wouldn't argue with that because I don't know the language you're using as a base for illustration.
Let me give you one that even wazungus have not agreed on, TOMATODo we say T-O-M-A-T-O or T-O-M-E-T-O ?
Wazungus can't agree on which one is the correct one. I use t-o-m-e-t-o because that's what the majority of the English people use.
But if I'm speaking in Swahili and I want to inject this word into the conversation but in English, I will say t-o-m-a-t-o. In our Mombasa Kiswahili, we even go further and say t-a-m-a-t-a.Courage

Hello people,
I have been following this post with keen interest as it is indeed very enlightening and very educative. I took an LL110 class during my first year at Uni and we had a good laugh with our teacher as he pointed some of the common mistakes non-English speaking people make. I am glad that I took that class!
Just to add to the learning another word that is often pronounced incorrectly is 'peasant'. A lot of people including learned people say 'pizant' which always makes me think of pizza :) The right way to pronounce it is with an 'e' sound rather and 'i' hence 'pezant'. The same mistake is made when pronouncing 'weapon'.
And talking of pizza that too is mispronounced. Most people call it pizza just the way it is written but it is actually pronounced 'pitza'.
Let the learning continue....

Mwalimu Mhandisi Bwana Courage, your class is very educative
kwani pole pole unatukumbusha. Nimewahi kuchekwa sana na
wapwa wangu wanaoishi Uingereza (hawajui kabisa Kiswahili)
kwa kutamka maneno haya:
months (miezi) na maths (kifupi cha mathematics;
hisabati)
. Ilikuwa mwaka 1998 hadi leo sijui nilikosea wapi....
msaada tafadhali!

Anna,
I'm not really a teacher by profession; I'm an

on a volunteer basis on Saturdays. Most of the words I bring
here for discussion are from my class, the words that pose
challenges to my students.
English is a tough language to learn because
there's no formula for pronunciation. each word is
memorized on its own.
For example;
The word ROUGH is pronounced as R-A-A-F gh has
an F sound
but
The word THOUGH becomes DH-O-O
gh is silent. Even TH becomes DH
!!!!!!
If you sit in my class, you'll be amazed at
all the different pronunciation problems people have around
the world.

Mwai,
I had
the same problem with the word JUICE until I came to Canada
and learned the correct way to do it. We all rely on how our
teachers pronounce things so if a teacher does not know a
word very well, we adopt the same mistake in pronouncing
that word.
House Chores ? It's simple:
Ha-u-s ch-o-o-s Neno hilo latamkwa
kama choo
