U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power to Launch #FreeThe20 Women Political Prisoners and Prisoners of Concern Campaign

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power will launch the #FreeThe20 campaign, to draw attention to the plight of women political prisoners and other prisoners of concern, on Tuesday, September 1, at the U.S. Department of State Daily Press Briefing in Washington, D.C.

Throughout September, the Department will highlight 20 individual cases of women prisoners from around the world who are unjustly imprisoned, featuring one case per business day. These women will be featured on social media accounts for Ambassador Power and the U.S. Mission to the UN, and will be profiled on www.HumanRights.gov.

The Daily Press Briefing will be at 2:00pm. Ambassador Power will make remarks and take questions from journalists at the top of the briefing. Attending journalists should be seated in the State Department’s press briefing room no later than 1:45 p.m. The press briefing room is accessible from the 23rd Street Entrance of the Department.

Media representatives may attend this event upon presentation of one of the following: (1) A U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center); (2) a media-issued photo identification card; or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by a government-issued photo identification card (driver's license, passport).
