[wanabidii] Molo Crash - WHERE ARE STAKEHOLDERS!

1. Let us stop this linear view of things. What we need is a muti-pronged approach
2. But needs the leadership of the government and the rising up of citizens
3. We need to arrest all traffic police officers on a road where an accident happens to make them account for how there was overloading, un-road-worthiness, over-speeding happening in their stretch of the tarmac; We also need Police bosses to resign when their officers fail.

This is because we pay these guys to stay awake so that we can sleep; If they sleep on the job then they must be charged with negligence, incompetence, as accomplices, or for connivance all that cause deaths.

We Need Kimaiyo to take very very stun action against officers who fail to perform. Why do we pay police officers salaries?

3.  We need Kenyans to take responsibility for their safety yes. I personally take responsibilities. Matatus on my route I board have stories to tell. I never accept overloading, I speak up against overtaking and overspeeding etc.. I have on many ocassions alighted from matatus that did not observe traffic rules.. Yes every one here must take responsibility for their safety.

One day in 2006 on our way from Meru I could see the Shuttle driver was dozing.. I asked the driver to allow me to alight and relieve myself in the next stage and passengers woke up to protest and they agreed with the driver that I should not be given the opportunity until we got to Runyenjes.,, any way when we stopped at Runyenjes I whispered to the driver that he was dozing and i wanted to wake him up... I also whispered to my closest mate in the matatu. The driver stayed awake all the way to Nbi and he thanked me for how I had done this without embarassing him.

4. The media needs to be useful in this campaign. Apart from telling us that a Nissan carrying 29 people has killed 21 of them in Molo... they should now tell us who was the owner of the matatu, who was the driver, why did he overload, who were the police officer on the molo route with numerous police checks who did not enforce the law..meaning they were bribed? WHy have they not been sacked and arraigned in court? This is what the media must take up as its role..

5. The ministry headed by Kimunya must revise the traffic rules. I said here that as policy practitioner, hefty fines will lead to overloading and overspeeding so that crews raise more cash to bribe the police officers.... The traffic rules we have are counterproductive. Good rules are those which impose a very low fine are implemented to the letter!!!!

Happy New Year,
This is our time Kenyans

We seriously need to style up, either through civic education, or through the education system, eg Social Ethics should be a compulsory subject throughout schooling age for all children (it was in the school I went to).

I think we should agree that the major cause of accidents on our roads is US - PERIOD.

We drive unroadworthy cars, drink alcohol, spoil the roads by overloading, bribe police officers, etc.

Evans,
Sad  day yet again!
You are  right in your assertion and these issues need to be tackled in the best way possible. This is  why we are yearning for leaders who will ensure that not only  workable policies are formulated but that they are enforced. The ministry of transport, health, home affairs/internal security (police dept)will have to work closely so as to minimise death on kenyan roads.
At personal level, it is every driver's responsibility to ensure road safety (his/her own, passengers and that of the public). This would imply road worthy vehicles and the right attitude whilst on the wheel. At government or county  level, it is their responsibility to ensure that roads are worthy of driving on.
Kenyans have cried fowl for  a long time, they must put things right by electing the right team come March  the 4th. Whatever team is elected, it is vital that Kenyans start thinking hard of forming and using lobby groups in each and every sector.

Its time the Matatu crew, matatu owners and traffic police do a conference on disaster management where causes of accidents spells the core theme.

While there are various causes that contributes road accidents,i opine that the following are key contributors;-

1.Target - Some matatu owners have put a sealing as a target the crew must hand over and the end of the day.The crew have to work for that target and possibly surpass so as to enjoy the extra hence over speed to fetch on time.

2.Stealing - some matatu crews steal the mat for a night kill. They have to do fast rounds so as to return the mat to "wake up again - fresh - not really fresh" to start working for the day. Here, some owners have no idea that their asset was on jobo at night, hence one continues working without resting.

3.Overloading where weight controls the driver.

4.Bad roads - either by weather or smoothness that drivers are overtaken or bends that require a professional driver.

5.Unhealth competion - the ups and downs by drivers (some not skilled/trained) competes in disregard to the safety of passengers and other road users.

6.Mechanical - some vehicles are not un-roadworthy,or not well maintained by the owners or poor workmanship by mechanics hence failure to operate even in the best conditions of the road.

7.Corrupt police officers who play one eye blind oblivious of the dangers that looms high.

Granted, the stakeholders have a bone to chew together.

Twenty people died while seven others were critically injured after a matatu they were travelling in lost control and plunged into a ravine Wednesday.

This brings to 31 people dead and seven injured in Nakuru alone in less than 48 hours since the dawn of the New Year. Eleven people died at the notorious Salgaa black spot on the Nakuru Eldoret Highway on January 1.

The 2 pm accident drew large crowds of curious onlookers and Good Samaritans who struggled to retrieve bodies from the wreckage and save survivors who were stuck in the vehicle.

The horrific road crash happened on the Molo-Olenguruone highway in Nakuru County in a hilly area characterised by hairpin bends and deep gorges down the roadside.

The accident occurred at Quarry area a few kilometres from Molo Town at a site where stonemasons mine building stones.

The 14-seater matatu which was carrying passengers from Olenguruone Town in Kuresoi District to Molo Town, lost control and veered off the road, plunging several metres down a ravine.

Incidentally, the large body count pointed out the fact that the vehicle, which is licensed to carry just 14 people besides the driver, was overloaded.

Rift Valley police boss John Mbijiwe, who visited the scene of the crash as well as survivors at Molo District Hospital said stern action would be taken against traffic police officers manning roadblocks along the 43-kilometre Molo-Olenguruone stretch.

"If the vehicle passed the officers on the road and they did not stop it, action has to be taken against the officers," said Mr Mbijjiwe.

Visibly angry, he issued a stern warning to errant drivers plying that route which is notorious for overloading and careless driving.

At the scene, Mr Mbijjiwe said that 10 men, two women, and seven children had perished in the accident, bringing the total to 19.

However, when Nation visited Molo District Hospital later, we found that an elderly woman had passed on.
