[wanabidii] Re: UNANSWERED QUESTION ON IDPS

Lister,

You say a big thing thura, a very big thing. What happened to the land these people owned before if they have to be given money to buy land again?  This has been a matter of discussion on several media outlets in the last few yrs.

It's generally understood that almost all the remaining IDPs did not really own any property anywhere. They weree small-traders who rented accommodation in whichever areas they were kicked out of. Most who owned farms and property went back and sold their land (under AP protection) and moved on. But there are cases of those who sold their land and then came back to the IDP camps.

Then there are people who are imposters. They just walked into IDP camps and claimed to be IDPs.

Then we have situations of man and wife going to 2 separate IDP camps in order to be "compensated" twice.

In Kenya, anything is possible so you can just see lots of corruption and deceit in there somewhere.

Has anyone ever asked why there are only Kikuyus in IDP camps but none of Luos, Luhyas or Kales?  They were kicked out of Central, Nairobi and places like Nakuru and Naivasha. How come none of them are in IDP camps?  Kisiis, like Kikuyus, were kicked out of Rift Valley. How come there's none in IDP camps?

These are interesting questions to ask.

Courage

Lister,

Perhaps we need to understand the definition of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the context of Post Elections Violence (P.E.V) OF 2007/8 in Reference to the Mutesh land that has been returned and a compensation of 5 million as was ordered by the court.

during the P.E.V Upheaval,we had so many people housed at Jamuhuri park,Mathare North,Dandora among other places in Nairobi.

We also had some in the towns that were affected where RUDU NYUMBANI campaigns saw them make to their Ushagos.

Subject: [wanabidii] UNANSWERED QUESTION ON IDPS

WHO ARE THE CURRENT OCCUPANTS OF THE LAND ONCE INHABITED BY THE IDPS THE GOVT IS COMPENSATING? I thought the money being dished out by the govt is to help the displaced persons to resettle i.e. start incoming generating projects and put up new living structures on the land they once occupied.
When the money is meant to help them buy new pieces of land, I'm lost in the dark. I thought there was reconciliation and that just like what deputy President Ruto did to return Mr. Muteshi's 100 acres, those who forcefully took IDP land would have returned it to the original owners or give them cash to buy new ones, if there was goodwill and truthfulness in reconciliation.
