The African leadership is in ICU. Americans and Europeans think on behalf of our leaders. Most of African leaders have heads without minds. So what do you expect? Nothing

The teachers salaries really circulate in the grassroots - i remember my mother used to send me with bottles (tree top) of milk and a band of vegetable (sukuma/saga/managu/tomatoes/onions) etc to a nearby school where the teachers used to pay at end of each month.
We have too much capital flight not only on machinery (prados, computers etc),but on commodities that can spice up our economy i.e Webuye is not producing paper since management and lack of cash is a problem yet we import paper from south Africa among other countries for local use.Fruits, maize, rice, eggs, etc are among the food commodities we import yet we can produce the same!
We must do something to the local economy so that we don't cry when sanctions call in!I once learn t that "Indian Economy is Indian rural Economy"!Evans MACHERAWe need to build Kenyan Economy in the rural areas!

Very true Evans, very very true. You put 50k in the hands of a teacher and that money will be spent in kenya. But you put the same money in the hands of a wealthy elite and that money may just be used to buy an expensive pair of Italian shoes, thus transferring that money to Italy !!!!!Courage

--The other day, I went into a popular restaurant in Homa Bay County and found it empty. I asked the waiter what had happened, and she told me that the teachers had not earned--that they were being punished for being on strike. Now, her employer too was threatening to shut down the establishment, and the door to her income. I can imagine the boomerang effect. Pay the teachers handsomely and you will build this economy handsomely. Deny them the money and you starve the economy. Almost all the money spent on other elites are a waste--the transfer of meagre funds to Prado countries and international boutiques. It is a lie to say that the money has been devolved when it is denied to the people who build the local economy and given to gangsters of waste and capital flight--the grandsons and daughters of primordial chiefs who sold Africa in exchange for trinkets.By Adrian Onyando ( Lecturer,Egerton University).
