Re: [wanabidii] What kind of democracy do we want in Tanzania ?

Dear Tracy much thanx for idea
I am hoping many Tanzanians understand some if not all of  what democracy covers. It is true that to many of us who haven't gone through political science courses are not able to clearly identify all the 10 mentioned areas of what democracy covers. In fact I would rather suggest that while discussing this topic we consider democracy and good governance under one umbrella as they are simultaneously practiced. It is up to all who are more knowledgeable  on the areas to keep on educating the rest. Dear colleagues please chip in more ideas which are relevant to Tanzania's circumstances as this thread is worthy to be discussed in detail

Many of us in Tanzania  and abroad are demanding democracy which we think we understand but there is no consensus on what it covers. At the minimum democracy should include:

1.     Government based on majority rule;

2.     Government based on the consent of the governed;

3.     Free and fair elections at regular intervals;

4.     Protection of minorities;

5.     Respect for basic human rights and freedoms;

6.     Equality before the law;

7.     Due process and political pluralism;

8.     Respect for opposition;

9.     Support for democratic political institutions;

10.    Interest in and access to political participation, among other components (Joshua Kurlantzick 2013).
