Clara, I know there is a lot of apprehension on what and when Salaries and Remuneration Commission will release the salaries for legilastors, governors and senators among others. We want to assure you we will do that well before the D-Day, March 4th just to ensure that there is no mischief by the incoming legislators. To do that we had to carry out extensive and intensive job evaluation and job descritpition for these offices and determine the job worth of these offices. To come with figures we have to take into consideration the fiscal sustainability, affordability, principles of fairness, equity and transparency in wage setting. It is not something we could do in the boardroom. No we had to approach it in a scientific manner, to ensure that the wage structure is defensible, justified and fair. We are at the tail end of the exercise and we will pretty soon engage the public and I hope you will send us your thoughts once we invite the public to participate in the discussions about the proposed pay for the elected and non elected state officers.
We also want to state clearly, as a Commission we want the elected leaders to go into the elections with the mission to serve. It should not be pegged by what will I earn, how much will an MP earn compared to a Senator or which is a better option for me? No they should be driven by the desire to serve and make a difference to the country and people of KENYA.
The other thing we need to appreciate is the whole management of the public sector wages and salaries has been a mess for the last four/five decades. To undo all this mess will take some time. The Commission has been tasked quite a heavy task. This along with the devolved system of government which will see an increase in the wage bill due to the creation of a number of new offices makes the work of the Commission quite onerous. The Commission's plate is full but we are confident with the support and encouragement we will get from people like you we will have built a strong foundation to bring sanity and order in public sector wage management.

Dear Kenyans,Greetings to you all.With only just about a month to the next parliaments (county,national & senate), i though Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) should by now have published the salaries for these "people's" representative as promised here http://www.capitalfm.co.ke/news/2012/10/president-civil-servants-future-salaries-due-in-dec/.By doing so, we hope SRC have taken into account the following;
- Kenyas GDP
- hours legislators put in (work)
- work performance/output by legislators
- poverty levels
- bench-marking with other democracies
I am proposing a taxable salary and allowances for all legislators not exceeding Ksh 200,000 with a 4days, 8hrs working week.I am calling all kenyans to set the agenda for SRC, that time is now, not tomorrow to publish salaries for legislators who make it after march 4th. Please advocate, agitate,picket, demonstrate, blog, tweet, facebook, do whatever you got to do to have SRC do that now because of the following;
- the primaries have shown that some people/parties are determine to create jobs for buddies, relatives and deal pushers
- legislature has attracted even hyenas in sheep's pen- the corrupt,drug dealers, illiterates and snobs
- the determination to be in the legislature has led to rigging, violence, defections, false promises and impunity and disregards to the laws of the land
If SRC had published the salaries, what we have witnessed the past few days would not have been witnessed. Their failure to publish reasonable salaries made nominations a do or die contest.While some legislators are genuinely out to make a difference in Kenya and to the people they represent, the Ksh 800,000 salary, few working hours and influence peddling have made legislature a members club for retirees, lazybones, idlers, corrupt, opportunists, influence and drug peddlers to so badly want to be voted in that they will kill to guarantee to get in legislature.So am calling on the Kenyans, Media, Religious organizations, NGOs, Humans rights groups, everyone to make this the agenda before 4th of march so that it is not do-or-die to go to legislature which is so because of the Ksh 800,000 + legislatures are salivating for and the quest to win through whichever means.Warsama, you are a media personality, please push this agenda to have SRC publish the salaries because it will make our political competition about issues, about representation and not about employment of legislators.Representation in legislature should be a selfless calling to serve people without expecting reward, it is service to the people.Media houses, KTN, NTV, CITIZEN, Nation, Standard, Star, let this be they agenda.
