THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE; WHO WAS THE STAR & WHO WAS THE POLITICAL CLOWN?

The United National Independence Party (UNIP) this evening resurrected a little hope of bouncing back to power after Tilyenji Kaunda put up a stunning performance among his competitors.

Tilyenji, son to Zambia's founding President Kenneth Kaunda proved against all odds that the death of UNIP may have been highly exaggerated.

Kaunda was often calm and collected whilst providing short and concise answers and explainations as to what UNIP will do when voted in power.

Comrade Eric Chanda of the 4th Revolution however lost everyone in translation with his vehement anti-western rhetoric.

He often attempted to mimic late President Micheal Sata's trademark voice and occasionally came out imitating Julius Malema, the EFF leader in South Africa.

At one point, Chanda even interrupted Tilyenji Kaunda with an outburst of "you greedy generation" something that drew murmurs from the audience.

Chanda's style protrayed him to be a loose canon who would double as a political clown.

The race to Plot One seems to have produced a free cure for HIV/AIDS. Well that is if Dr. Ludwig Sondashi will sail through to State House.

The former governmemt Minister at times appeared impatient and often reminded host Costa Mwansa of just how little the time he was allocated.

Although Sondashi seemed to have had the ideas, explaining them clearly was a rather painful process as his speech was often jumbled up without giving clear outlines for example on how he would implement his plan of a nationwide agricultural policy.

Dr. Dan Pule of the CDP was the other man to marvel at this evening as he demonstrated his accountancy experience will definately not fail him.

Pule often came out intelligent by providing detailed plans of what he would like to achieve as President.

His Christian faith was also one of the biggest features in his speech.

But Pule's donning of a hat throughout the debate was something the audience occasionally whispered about. Others contended it made the eloquent man of the pulpit with a husky voice look like "Pimp".

He occasionally got into some witty rivalries with Dr. Ludwig Sondashi.

Driving Zambia Forward in the International Community
Zambia has long held a special place amongst its neighbours in the region. In days gone by it served as a second home to freedom fighters, and in recent decades it has become a beacon of democracy and stability in the region. This status is a great source of pride for us.

However, these friendships must be maintained and yet in recent years we have perhaps grown distant and somewhat isolated even. This is only to our disadvantage. We are committed to strengthening those relationships once again and reaffirming our high standing in the region.

These relations with our regional neighbours are not just a matter of friendship and good manners. These same countries can be our business partners; they are ready markets for export right on our doorstep. We want to create an environment in which Zambian businesses can take full advantage of the opportunities in the region.

Looking beyond the region and beyond Africa, Zambia must make itself heard. We have an important role to play as a peace-loving democracy endowed with natural resources, beautiful landscapes and a young population ready to drive the country forward.

However, we will not take big delegations abroad at the expense of the Zambian taxpayer every time an international event pops up. We will work on the basis of what is necessary and what is advantageous for the Zambian people and the region. This is in order to preserve revenues that can be better invested in areas that will deliver greater benefit, such as education and providing support to local businesses.

Whilst encouraging investment in Zambia we will keep the interests of the people at the heart of every deal we make. We will secure only the best projects for Zambia, and those that provide us with additional revenues for spending on education and healthcare, create jobs and generate opportunities for Zambian businesses.

Hakainde Hichilema
UPND President

Statement from Dipak Patel, UPND Campaign Manager:

We wish to disassociate ourselves completely from comments made at the Choma rally yesterday by PF Southern Province Minister Daniel Munkombwe.

Any appeal he made to voters based on tribe is rejected by our campaign completely. The foundation of our message has always been one of national unity, inclusiveness and equality. This is without exception.

We also stand in direct opposition to past remarks of Mr Munkonbwe who has been reported as saying "politicians go into government to eat". This is in direct contrast to our position.

Indeed, the selfishness and poor quality leadership of politicians in the past is what has held Zambia back from reaching its potential, it is the reason why our people remain in poverty even though there is so much natural wealth within our borders.

We are encouraging Zambians to vote for Mr Hichilema because of his desire to serve all Zambians, his track record as an economic manager and successful farmer, his Christian values and his opposition to tribal and panga politics.
