Counselor Tom Shannon and Senior Advisor to the Secretary and Ambassador David Thorne will travel to Pakse, Laos to lead the U.S. delegation to the Extraordinary Meeting of the Friends of the Lower Mekong on February 2. Meeting participants will discuss economic growth and environmental sustainability in the Mekong region, and address the connections between water resources, energy needs and food security. On February 3, Counselor Shannon and Ambassador Thorne will travel to Vietnam to discuss U.S.-Vietnam priorities outlined in the Comprehensive Partnership to advance bilateral and regional objectives of peace, stability, rule of law, and economic prosperity. They will meet with government officials and civil society to continue conversations about sustainable development in the Mekong region, and review shared accomplishments and priorities of the bilateral relationship as the United States and Vietnam celebrate the 20th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral relations in 2015. |
