[wanabidii] Re: (VVM Forum) English Grammar

Gitonga,

I'm not surprised at all with the way the S Sudanese mangle English. I have some Northern Ugandan and South Sudanese friends in Canada and they speak pretty much the same way.

I've discovered that their mother-tongues are very similar and they are actually translating their mother-tongues word-for-word into English. It makes for very interesting conversations with them. The same way a Luo may say, "stop burning my stomach"  to mean "Stop annoying me". These friends speak like this except that they are not joking. They think that's the right English.

Sometimes Wazungus hear that and think that the guys are speaking very deep, Shakespearean English !!!!

Courage,

I think it is pretty obvious that the first one is wrong.I think you should come go to South Sudan where many speak as follows:

1. I waited and waited until you did not come and I left
2. I will not do another thing else
3. Those of Simon are not here
4. Many childrens and mens are not have gone to for schooling
5. Look at this one,he has parked in the verandah of the road - (signifying the pavement)

Let's try this one today. I've noticed a few people here and there confusing Have and Having.

Here is a scenario:

Mwamburi is an IT professional. He gets a lot of contracts/tenders from international organizations such as the UN, AU, etc., and also from companies, governments and individuals. His job demands a lot of traveling to different locations around the world to undertake projects. Right now, he's in India doing a setting up a Network for a UN office in India. You meet Mwamburi today and ask him:

Hey, friend, long time !!!!!  What are you up to nowadays?

He replies:

I'm having a UN project in India as we speak.

Or

I have a UN project in India as we speak.

Which of those 2 sentences is correct?

Courage
