[wanabidii] Re: [PK] An Interesting Question

A leader is someone who has a vision/idea, he/she articulates that vision publicly, convinces people to support it and goes on to have that vision implemented. So the key word is Vision or ideas. yes a leader may also be a manager but a manager who comes up with an idea, convinces the workers to support that idea and take ownership of that idea and help implement it.

A manager is simply someone charged with the responsibility to supervise a group of people and mandated to achieve certain outcomes by optimizing the use of the material and human resources given to him/her. A manager makes sure the approved logistics are carried out and that a project tasked to his/her group is completed.

In history, it's very common to find a lot of leaders who were very poor managers. Very few leaders are also good managers. A university professor, by the nature of his/her work, is a leader in his/her field. But he/she makes for a very poor manager in most cases. Most highly educated people (PhDs etc.) make for very poor managers.

A manager simply has to make sure the mandate he/she is given is carried out. The only vision/idea required of a manager is of operational nature e.g. do we courier this parcel or mail it by regular postage?  A manager does not need to convince any employee of his/hers to accept an idea, even though that would be a bonus. He/she needs only to get the workers to carry out their duties as required by their job descriptions.

Most of our African presidents and Prime Ministers, especially the ones at Independence, were leaders but horrible managers. . Most Western Presidents and Prime Ministers are managers but very weak leaders.

A manager manages the status quo. A leader comes with vision. Innovation comes from a leader. It is a plus if one is a leader and manager.

Subject: [PK] An Interesting Question
From: mauricejoduor@gmail.com

What's the difference between a Manager and a Leader?

This is an assignment that my daughter has been given as a summer homework to investigate and write a one-page essay on. She hands it in in Sept when she joins Grade 11 (Form 3).
