THE PRESIDENT WAS BADLY SHAKEN BUT AS FAR AS WE ARE ABLE TO DETERMINE SUFFERED NO SERIOUS INJURIES. 2. THE PRESIDENT WAS RETURNING TO HIS MSASANI BAY RESIDENCE FOLLOWING TALKS IN STATE HOUSE WITH PRESIDENTS MOBUTU AND MICOMBERO. 3. THE EMBASSY HAS LEARNED FROM USUALLY RELIABLE SOURCES THAT THE TANZANIANS HAD HOPED THAT THE STORY WOULD BE UNREPORTED SO AS TO MINIMIZE ANY POSSIBLE ADVERSE REACTION SINCE THE DRIVER OF THE SMALL TRUCK WHICH STRUCK THE PRESIDENT'S CAR WAS AN ASIAN. 4. THE STORY HAS SO FAR BEEN UNREPORTED IN TANZANIAN MEDIA, BUT WAS HEARD MONDAY A.M. ON VOA 0630 NEWSCAST. THAT NEWSCAST IMPROPERLY IDENTIFIED THE ACCIDENT AS HAVING OCCURRED ON SUNDAY, JULY 22.
