[wanabidii] Obama Should Now Sign Rome Statute

BARACK Obama was elected president in 2008 and promised to close down the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Obama halfheartedly tried to close it in his first term but was overruled by Congress. Now Obama has said that he will try and close it again as "it is not necessary to keep America safe." There are still 166 detainees in Guantanamo. None have been given a fair trial. Most have been tortured. Many were renditioned there secretly.

Many detainees are innocent people who just were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Around 100 prisoners have been cleared for release but hardline Congressmen are blocking their departure. This is inhumane. Former Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld, who personally signed torture orders, and many other Americans should be prosecuted for what happened in Guantanamo.

The United States has not signed the Rome Statute and so cannot be prosecuted by the ICC for crimes against humanity. America is rightly accused of double standards when it supports ICC prosecutions, including those of Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto.

Obama should indeed make another effort to close Guantanamo. But he should also sign the Rome Statute. It might make the USA behave a bit better.

Quote of the day: "We love death. The US loves life. That is the difference between us two." -- Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed by US Navy Seals on May 2, 2011.
