That question is meant to shock you and test your ability to think on your feet. It sounds confrontational but it's not, it's actually a very polite and legitimate question. You can take control of this question and use it to your advantage. You must think like a politician on this one. Your answer should take about 3 minutes and no more. One minute is too short and 5 minutes is too long. In such questions, TELL A STORY; always.

Here is one story I once told in a job interview. I was applying for a position of a Technical Advisor at a Water engineering Consultancy:

Why should you give me this job?  Simple.

This job requires someone with 4 attributes:

1. Someone with a Water or Chemical Engineering degree

2. Someone conscious of meeting deadlines and budgets

3. Someone very detail-oriented

4. But most importantly, someone with an extensive experience and thorough knowledge of technical and all aspects of Water Treatment and Distribution (Water S&D)

I have all those attributes. I have my Chemical Engineering degree from McGill University in Montreal;I have supervised several water projects over the years and met deadlines and budgets in each case; my finished work has so far been error-free  and confirmed to be so by Auditors and inspectors.
But most importantly, I have more than 8 yrs experience undertaking Water projects across the country and have worked in all aspects of  Water S&D. As a result I have gained a very thorough knowledge of Technical and other aspects of Water S&D.

Let me give you one example that I'm particularly proud of:

There was a time I was given an assignment to solve a Rusty Water problem at a military barracks.The barracks was receiving Chloraminated water from the nearby city. The water was of good quality as it entered the barracks but the quality rapidly deteriorated immediately it entered the Barracks' piping system. The piping was old and rusting and required 1 million dollars to replace.  There were several options open to us. One of them was to feed more Chlorine. But this would require further feeding of Ammonia in order to  maintain the water as Chloraminated. This would require $300k to install the necessary equipment and a further $500k per year to operate ($3.5 million over 10 yrs). Another alternative was to feed Zinc Orthophosphate and that would form a layer on the Steel piping to retard the Rusting. This would cost $200k for equipment and a further $300k a year to operate ($3.2 million over 10 yrs).

Of course most engineering consultants would prefer the more expensive methods because the fee, 15%  of the project cost (pro-rated to 10 yrs). The $1 million for piping would be a one-time expense and the piping would be good for 30 yrs. But PVC piping would last forever, almost anyway.

I recommended that we simply replace the Ductile steel piping with PVC. This was a one-time expense and no on-going operations expenses, plus no additional chemical being added into the water. The project was completed in time, way, way below the projected budget and the water was instantly safe for drinking. The military was very pleased with this work and gave us 5 other similar projects in their other barracks across the country.

So once again, you should give me this job because I have the skills and attributes required for the position.
