Press Releases: U.S. - Japan Extended Deterrence Dialogue June 10 - 12 06/09/2014 01:14 PM EDT U.S. - Japan Extended Deterrence Dialogue June 10 - 12 Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC June 9, 2014 The United States and Japan will hold their bilateral Extended Deterrence Dialogue (EDD) June 10-12 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Extended Deterrence Dialogue reinforces the credibility of the U.S. defense commitment to Japan, including through discussions about strategic and conventional capabilities, and helps to promote regional stability from a near and long-term perspective. The two governments regularly discuss deterrence as part of their broad security cooperation agenda and have held the EDD on a regular basis since 2010. As part of the talks, U.S. and Japanese participants will visit nuclear-related sites at Sandia National Laboratories to deepen their understanding of the strategic weapons systems that support U.S. extended deterrence guarantees, and how the United States ensures its strategic forces remain safe, secure, and effective.
