[wanabidii] PhD position announcement

PhD position available in the area of life cycle assessment for sustainable chemistry

Job offer: PhD position in the research group on Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainable Chemistry (CyVi)
Place: Institute of Molecular Sciences (ISM), University Bordeaux 1 (Science and Technology)
Starting date: 1st September 2013
Duration: 3 years
Title: Life cycle assessment of supramolecular organic photovoltaic systems
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has become a well-respected method for the environmental sustainability assessment of products. The use of LCA for informing research in the area of molecular science is a challenging endeavour. In this context, the project foresees to apply LCA in a complementary way to the efforts done by nanoscientists in developing sustainable supramolecular organic photovoltaic systems, and to compare those results with existing LCA studies on conventional photovoltaic and other energy systems.
This complementarity will allow selecting the solutions with the highest sustainable innovation potential, having a holistic view and considering the Green Chemistry principles and the insights provided by the application of life cycle assessment. In addition, the project will contribute to an advancement of existing LCA methodologies, in particular by refining methods relevant for chemical substances. New life cycle impact assessment characterisation factors will be calculated and applied to the supramolecular organic photovoltaic systems studied. The life cycle assessment studies will be accompanied by the analysis of scenarios, variability and uncertainties. New life cycle inventories for different supramolecular organic photovoltaic systems will be created.
The PhD will be a co-supervised by Prof. Guido Sonnemann, leader of the research group on Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainable Chemistry, and Dr. Dario Bassani from the group on Organic Nanostructures (NEO), which deals with the development of new molecular and supramolecular architectures at the nanometric scale with a particular focus on molecular design & engineering. Both groups are part of the Institute of Molecular Sciences, a joint research unit of the University of Bordeaux 1 with the CNRS and the Polytechnic Institute of Bordeaux (IPB). The candidate should have experiences in organic chemistry and material science and if possible also in life cycle assessment and energy systems. A very good level of English is mandatory.
