Maurice, you see! the class is expanding now.
Regardless of your engeneering speciality, you can develop and become good English teachet too!
Let me give you surprising story about doing things as hobby.
Recently, I happen to meet with an American proffesor at his 60's. He is mathematician and involved in developing mathematical models. He is teaching an international scientific writing course. Jointly with other two friends, they wrote a book on writing and presenting scientific papers. He is doing this as a hobby and apparently he likes it so much.
My observation with most of our journalists: they are writing to impress instead of expressing. They use difficult words and sometimes wrongly!
A reader would like attraction to read a story and not impressions that you know bombastic words used wrongly!. I hope journalists will read this and express their stories in a more attracting way!

Dear Gikaro
Even though I am not a specialist in English language but I would like to bring you to attention that English like other languages has formula. The way you have put the sentense ''The reason I am buying that car is it has more room in the boot/trunk for our luggage should we travel as a family" seems awkward please rethink about it, I think Maurice is right On Sat, May 11, 2013 at 12:10 PM, Gikaro Ryoba <gikaroryoba@yahoo.com> wrote:
--English has got no formula. I suppose you could drop the words "why" and "that" and the correct statement could be: "The reason I am buying that car is it has more room in the boot/trunk for our luggage should we travel as a family" . Anyway, English language is very funny.From: Maurice Oduor <mauricejoduor@gmail.com>

But in THOUGHT (Thot) GH is now silentThe word ROUGH (Raf) GH has an F soundHeheheheheheheheheheheeeeeee !!!!!!!Anna, kufundisha nindahitaji at least a B.Ed lakini maskini miye ni Engineer.
Lakini I'm willing to help whoever needs help. They can just send me the written material privately and I'll be honoured to offer assistance. English is one of the most difficult languages to learn because there is no formula to follow. You learn to read each word separately and by memory. Take this example:
English has no formula a set of letters may not be pronounced the same way in different words. This is why English is very difficult to learn.

Thanks Maurice for this piece. You have reminded me of a book,'common mistakes...'
As with the first sentence, I totally agree with you on faulting the 'reason why ...is because...' type of construction'. However, I am wandering if it couldn't be more correct this way;
i) The reason I am buying that car is that..... To mean (the same);
ii)I am buying that car because it has......

CourageRoz,I don't think these Journalism schools are teaching these Reporters any basic pronunciation at all. I would like to attend one of those schools as research just to see how the lecturers themselves pronounce some of these words.

CourageI hope this will come in handy to those who were not sure. I too had trouble with these 2 items, among thousands of others, in my Secondary School years.The correct way to pronounce this name is: G-zavieAfricans generally say Zavia or Ksavia or KsaviePeople, especially the English-inclined, say ZeviaLet me use Kiswahili as a base for pronunciation.2. The name Xavier. The most famous form of this name is St. Francis Xavier. It's a French name so it must be pronounced the way the French pronounce it.The reason why I am buying that car is that it has more room in the boot/trunk for our luggage should we travel as a family.The correct way to say this is:The reason why I am buying that car is because it has more room in the boot/trunk for our luggage should we have to travel as a family.1. I have often heard people say:Guys and Gals,I just want to bring to your attention 2 items that have become pet peeves of mine lately. One has to do with simple grammar and the other, pronunciation.
