Asia Media America Bringing Worlds Together The play may be the thing for some folks, but for youngsters in parts of Asia, it's more in the costume. The activity is called CosPlay, short for "costume play," in which youngsters take on the persona of their favorite cartoon or graphic novel characters and gather to emulate them – for fun and sometimes to raise money for charitable events. The non-conventional activity has become so popular that conventions have been built around it. See story on page 6. UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla is the Asian Heritage Society's choice to receive the tenth annual Special Recognition Award, on behalf of a "distinguished academic career, strong dynamic leadership and pioneer efforts to insure diversity, reform curriculum and promote multidisciplinary research and global outreach," according to Society president, Rosalynn Carmen. See story on page 4. America is known for its diversity – and that includes food. When Tom Tillman returned to Thailand, after living in America, he took an appreciation for that quality with him. As a result, he has created recipes for hundreds of dishes – Italian, German, Japanese and even fast food and given it his personal interpretation. The result has been unusual foods such as Thaitalian spaghetti. His new column will bring some of those recipes to this magazine and the website www.asiamediaamerica.com every week. See story on page 5. Good for Business -- A green economy is good for the planet, no doubt. But it also may be even better for the pocketbook. That's what the Economic Policy Institute has been saying. More jobs for college grads may be available by going green. See story on page 24 Ripe with Opportunity - There's a real estate boom on – in Cuba, of all places. Investors are flocking to the island 90 miles off the United States. The catch is that you have to live there to be able to buy property. Still, prices are rising and people are buying – just from word of mouth. See story on page 26.
All about Outreach – The 12th annual Kyoto Prize Symposium Gala was held recently in San Diego. Led by Kazuo Inamori, founder of Kyocera, three achievers in science, technology and the arts were honored. See story on page 28. Science & Technology – The military is worried about the weather. More than three dozen top military, as well as security specialists, collectively, have been warning about the threat that climate change is to national security. And unlike some leaders of Congress, they are calling for action – now. See story on page 30.
