Obama camp slams 'outrageous and demeaning' GOPer's rape claim

White House Corresponden

The Ticket – 18 mins ago

Republican Richard Mourdock, candidate for Indiana's U.S. Senate seat, participates in a debate with Democrat Joe …President Barack Obama's reelection campaign on Wednesday denounced GOP Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's "outrageous and demeaning" comments on rape and pressed Mitt Romney to repudiate his fellow Republican.

Mourdock said during a debate on Tuesday that pregnancies resulting from rape are "something that God intended to happen." He supports access to abortion only when the woman's life is in danger.
"The president felt those comments were outrageous and demeaning to women," Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One as the president embarked on a blitz through battleground states.
"This is a reminder that a Republican Congress working with a Republican president Mitt Romney would feel that women should not be able to make choices about their own health care," she said.
Psaki was quick to turn Mourdock's comments into a weapon against Romney. "This is an issue where Mitt Romney is starring in an ad for this senator (sic) and it is perplexing that he wouldn't demand to have that ad taken down," she said. (Shortly after the debate, Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul released a statement saying that the former Massachusetts governor "disagrees with Richard Mourdock's comments, and they do not reflect his views.")
"I think it is clear that Mitt Romney, that many Republicans who are running for office including him, including Mr Mourdock have very extreme positions on issues that women care deeply about in this country," she said.
"And that if they have the opportunity to be partners, in the White House and in the Senate, then that is something that women should have, and I think will have, concern about as they are going to the voting booth," she said.

Women — especially single women — were a critical part of Obama's history-making 2008 coalition, and the embattled incumbent hopes they will help him edge out Romney this year in what both sides predict will be a razor's edge election.

Obama hammers Romney after Florida debate

The Ticket – 23 hrs ago

DELRAY BEACH, Fla.—The morning after Monday's showdown—the third and final between the candidates—President Barack Obama spent a postdebate rally here accusing Mitt Romney of switching positions on foreign policy and called his ideas "wrong and reckless."

"Last night [former Gov. Romney] was all over the map. Did you notice that?" Obama asked the crowd. "During the debate, he said he didn't want more troops in Iraq. But he was caught on video saying it was unthinkable not to leave 20,000 troops in Iraq."
Obama delivered his speech in a packed tennis stadium where he was introduced by West Palm Beach pizza shop owner Scott Van Duzer, who famously wrapped his arms around the president and lifted him off his feet in a bear hug last month. When Obama walked onstage, he and Van Duzer high-fived with both hands and briefly embraced, although the president's feet never left the ground.
Obama said that over the course of the campaign, Romney had switched his positions on keeping troops in Afghanistan, America's relationship with Israel, and the decision to kill Osama bin Laden. Obama reiterated the word he coined last week—"Romnesia"—which he has been using repeatedly when accusing the GOP challenger of switching positions.
Launching into a Jeff Foxworthy-style routine that replaced the word "redneck" with "Romnesia," Obama said: "If you say that you love American cars during a debate, but you wrote an article entitled 'Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,' you might have Romnesia!

"If you talk about how much you love teachers during a debate, but said just a few weeks ago that we shouldn't hire any more because it won't grow the economy, what do you have?"

"Romnesia!" the crowd shouted.

The president also took time to promote a new campaign booklet, "The New Economic Patriotism," which outlines an economic plan that increases federal government spending and raises taxes on the wealthy. Obama held up the magazine-style pamphlet and told the audience to read it to find out more about what he would do in a second term.

The campaign on Tuesday also released an ad, "Determination," to promote the blueprint, which Obama called his "plan for the next four years." The video basically introduces the topics in the booklet and shows the president speaking directly to the camera, urging viewers to compare his plan to Romney's.

"We're not there yet, but we've made real progress," Obama says in the ad. "And the last thing we should do is turn back now."

With two weeks left before Election Day, Obama has a full schedule of swing state campaigning ahead. Immediately following his address here, Obama traveled to Dayton, Ohio, for the second of several rallies this week.

CEO's ex-wife backs bid to unseal Romney testimony

By DENISE LAVOIE | Associated Press – 1 hr 25 mins ago

CANTON, Mass. (AP) — The ex-wife of Staples founder Tom Stemberg is in probate court in Massachusetts to tell a judge she's OK with unsealing testimony that former Gov. Mitt Romney gave in her divorce case.

Maureen Stemberg Sullivan appeared in court Wednesday with lawyer Gloria Allred. The Boston Globe has asked a judge to lift an impoundment order on Romney's testimony in the case from the 1990s.

Romney attorney Robert Jones told the judge he has no position on the request.

Stemberg has been a surrogate for Romney, now the Republican presidential nominee, and spoke on Romney's behalf at the GOP convention. Staples was founded with backing from Romney's firm, Bain Capital.

Allred says she does not object to the newspaper's motion to modify a confidentiality order that prevents parties in the divorce from discussing it.

In the first question of Monday's presidential debate, the candidates were asked to address recent attacks on U.S. embassies in Egypt and Libya.

Gov. Mitt Romney took a decidedly more conciliatory note than in last week's debate, opening his speaking time by praising President Barack Obama.

"I congratulate him on taking out Osama bin Laden and going after the leadership in al Qaeda," Romney said. "But we can't kill our way out of this mess."

Romney also cited what he considers a number of foreign policy failures since the Arab Spring, when a number of countries took steps to protest and force change in their governments, saying, "What we're seeing is a pretty dramatic reversal in the kind of hopes we had for that region."

Obama was far sharper in his remarks, saying, "Every time you've offered an opinion, you've been wrong."

"Governor Romney, I'm glad you agree that we have been successful in going after al Qaeda, but I have to tell you that your strategy ... has been one that has been all over the map," Obama said.

Obama then accused Romney of wanting to return the U.S. to the Cold War policies of the 1980's, saying that the GOP challenger is "sending mixed messages both to our troops and our allies."

"My strategy has been pretty straightforward, which is to go after the bad guys," Romney responded. He added, "Attacking me is not an agenda."
