On Monday September 28, Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Sarah Sewall met with a delegation of human rights activists from the Syrian Women’s Initiative for Peace and Democracy on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly. Under Secretary Sewall reiterated the U.S. Government’s commitment to helping the Syrian people reach a negotiated political transition that fulfills their aspirations for freedom and dignity, consistent with the Geneva Communique. She also stressed strong support for Syrian civil society and human rights defenders, who, despite abhorrent daily violence and grave risks posed by the Assad regime and extremist groups, especially ISIL, continue to advocate for human rights, counter extremist influence, deliver critical humanitarian relief, and work to develop common positions on their vision for a political transition. The Syrian grassroots leaders presented concrete recommendations—shaped by their extensive experience—for constructing a more inclusive political transition and humanitarian relief effort in Syria.
