[wanabidii] Re: (VVM Forum) Where does Kibera waste go to?

OTO,

If you guys are interested and it's feasible, one day I'll give you guys land in Ugenya to use as a Waste Recycling Facility. Transporting all the Waste would be a challenge though during the rainy seasons.

Courage

Friends,

Our day was loaded today.

In the morning, our Member of the Board of Trustees Mr. Rashid Juma and myself had a very fruitful engagement with Bamburi Cement at their offices.

In the afternoon, Mr. Otieno Sungu- our Programmes Manager and myself had a very fruitful engagement with Kounkuey Design Initiative and Usalama Youth Reform at Kibera. The import of all these meetings was the Waste Management Question.

With Bamburi, we are exploring ways and means through which we can convert Waste into a serious Raw Resource for Cement production. And at Kibera, we were pursuing serious partnership to pilot the process of separation of waste at source. Both Initiatives are good for Kenya and the general Public.

Now, one major issue cropped up? Those living in Laini Saba and Lindi Wards have never seen a Garbage Truck in their neighbourhood. Not even once. And this calls for serious soul searching. This forces most of them to dump their waste in the nearby Rivers. Is someone caring about how Waste is Managed in this part of the Country? For we cannot realize a Clean Kenya if we do not Manage our Waste.

Are we serious in the question of Waste Management in Nairobi and Kenya in general? Have we proportionately distributed the available Garbage Trucks across the 8 Divisions in Nairobi? And do we even have a collection Time Table for these Garbage Trucks? And is someone in charge?

I want to believe that these are some of the Questions we will be tasking ourselves with on the 28th August 2012 at the KICC during The 2nd Consultative Forum on Waste Management.

Ms April, Joe, David and Ms Harper during the discussions

As the Conveners of this Forum, we really want to appreciate the overwhelming responses we have received from across Kenya. The Municipal Council of Nyeri did confirm to me that they will attend the Forum, and His Worship the Mayor Cllr Edward Muteru was up beat about the same.

Let us come to the Forum and discuss some of these issues openly. Let us identify the problems we are facing, and we know each region has her own unique problems. Then, let us propose the best way out as we make tangible commitments to The Clean Kenya Campaign. Let us all own the process and work for the general good of Kenya as our contribution to a Clean Kenya by 1st June 2013.

And on the 8th September 2012, we will join with KDI, Usalama Youth Reform and others for a Major Clean-up in Kibera.

This Saturday, the 25th August 2012, we are joining with Fountain Youth Initiative and others for a Massive Clean up and Awareness Campaign in Githurai in Nairobi. On the same day at 2pm, we will be having discussions with several Youth Groups at the Catholic Church in Dandora under the auspices of the International Youth Council of Kenya.

You must take care of your immediate neighbourhoods and actions.

Let us all work for a Clean Kenya as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50.
