Everything is politics my dear... everything is politics...political leaders who lack popular support often manufacture such popular support by entering into war with a neighbor who they think is weak..The President of Malawi is weak politically internally though strong internationally because she has done all that the Western powers asked her to do...The President of Tanzania is under many pressures politically at home.. doctors are angry with his government over the Ulimboka affair and teachers are now also angry with his government for humiliating them and telling them they should forget about getting a living wage in the life time of the incumbent presidency...life for the majority of ordinary people in Malawi and Tanzania is miserable...I am not surprised that the leadership in these countries are working hard to divert the attention of their people from these economic hardships by beating war drums...It is an old trick used by all dictators from Hitler to iddi Amin. British and American weapons manufacturers will have a field day selling arms to both Tanzania and Malawi and in the end the jingoistic hysteria created in each country will allow the leadership to suppress the opposition parties even more claiming we need national unity to defend the country... Look at DRC... its weak leadership has been fighting with Rwanda and Uganda since Mobutu fell and see where the people of DRC are now.
Think critically before playing into the political tricks of beating war drums that our leaders are rolling out at a time when they do not even money to pay decent wages to teachers, doctors and nurses. It simply is war mongering politics being played out by both leaders inMalawi and Tanzania . War with Malawi is a singularly political issue... it has nothing to do with defending the right of the people who live near Lake Malawi/ Lake Nyasa to use the lake for fishing or whatever.. it is a war by the political leadership in Malawi and Tanzania who have been told by Western multinational companies that there is oil and gas in the lake and their greedy ways are causing them to forget that war will benefit the multinationals and will spell disaster to the people of Malawi and Tanzania who live near the lake... War will only benefit the generals who will be cooking up fake expenses accounts from far away Dar es Salaam purchasing used derelict tanks and ammunitions which will explode later as we witnessed in Gogo la Mboto and Mbagala. We must not be fooled by the rhetoric of nationalism coming out of the mouths of leaders who have been behaving like Chief Manguga in giving way our natural resources for pittance!!! No to war with an African neighbor over colonial border disputes and YES to quiet diplomacy without media posturing which hardens spirits turning them away from compromise...One does not negotiate through public pronouncements in the media or in Parliament!!!
As I pointd out elsewhere earlier : Let there be a media campaign to force both countries to respect the implications of having had their countries ratify " the 1982 UN Convention on Law of the Sea that stipulates that in case nations are bordered by a water body (sea or lake), the border of the two nations will always be on the middle of the water body." Let money be made available to raise teachers' and medical personnel's salaries in the public sector than on buying weapons and preparing for killing each other's poverty-stricken people.

Mwalimu, There are issues that needs politics in dealing with. But there are those issues which requires stern actions. --- On Fri, 8/3/12, Azaveli Lwaitama <kerezesia_mukalugaisa@hotmail.com> wrote:
