Tuvalu's Independence Day

Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
October 1, 2014

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I would like to congratulate the people of Tuvalu as you celebrate the 36th anniversary of your nation’s independence this October 1.

The United States and Tuvalu enjoy a robust relationship, strengthened by our cooperation in advancing our shared values and interests. We are working together to protect the environment and oceans, strengthen democratic institutions, combat the effects of climate change, and reinforce the rule of law in the Pacific region. The United States looks forward to deepening its partnership with Tuvalu further. We wish all Tuvaluans around the world a joyous celebration and peace and prosperity over the coming year.
