on 19th August 2012, Sabin President Dr. Peter Hotez published
anopinion piece in the Sunday edition of the NewYork Times, titled
"TropicalDiseases: The New Plague of Poverty." Reaching more than 2
million readers,the piece calls attention to the tight link between
poverty and the rise in thenumber of neglected tropical diseases found
in the United States. Dr. Hotezalso explains the current challenges we
face when diagnosing and treating NTDs,especially in poor communities.

Dr. Hotez offersseveral viable solutions to help combat this growing
problem, writing:

"TheSabin Vaccine Institute and Texas Children's Hospital Center for
VaccineDevelopment have organized a research unit to develop new
vaccines anddiagnostics. And Baylor College of Medicine created a new
tropical medicineschool to teach doctors and other health care
providers to recognize, diagnoseand treat these infections."

This piece helps draw attention to Sabin's ongoing effortsto combat
these diseases of poverty at home and abroad.
