| Folks, Must one be religious in order to have meaning in life? Let me put it another way: without god, do you feel empty? Hollow? Well, this is the question i had to confront in my discussions with Christians and Muslims over the past two weeks. Sometimes when i tell someone i am an Atheist, they, ask so what keeps you going in times of challenges? Whom do you turn to? It amazes me! Must life be such that there must be an object of faith that keeps you going? This is what the religious leaders keep telling you, that God or Allah will solve all your problems, that Jesus will carry your burden, and all shall be fine. But i think life must not be lived such that you imagine someone invisible is looking out for you. Let me give an example, i know some of you are looking for jobs and some are having very sick relatives, some are having a bad time at your places of work. Some are having bad relationships with your spouses, girlfriends and boyfriends, even family. As an Atheist, it is simple, god does not exist. So deal with the problem! Keep applying for that job. Talk to your boss, if it doesn't work, talk to a colleague! Dump your goddamn boyfriend if its not working, file a goddamn divorce if it is too hard for you and your spouse. Seek counseling from a professional. Don't look for help from the supernatural, coz really, the supernatural does not exist! Our meaning as Atheists is derived from the idea that life has to be lived to the full, and challenges must be met with courage, not prayer, not fasts and vigils, the courage that stems from the understanding that god, or the supernatural does not exist. We do not have an afterlife, there is no heaven for us, neither is there a hell of fire. But i must ask you today, must you have a Jesus, a Mohammed, a God, Allah to lean on in hard times?
