[wanabidii] National Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene Policy

Friends,

I was reading the National Environmental Saniatation and Hygiene Policy and I decided that I must share this with you. Again, we have been given 200 Copies by Dr Kepha Ombacho- the Chief Public Health Officer at the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation and
we will give these to the Delegates during The 2nd Consultative Forum on Waste Management on the 28th August 2012 at the KICC.

In his Forward to the Handbook, Mr. Mark Bor, the Permamnent Secretary to the Ministry had this to say;
"The National Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene Policy seeks to ensure that improved and better ESH facilities and services are available and accessible to all Kenyans. The Implementation of the Policy will greatly increase the demand for sanitation, hygiene, food safety, improved housing, use of safe drinking water, waste management, vector control at household level and encourage communities to take responsibility for improving the sanitation conditions of their immediate environment."

Now, this is what we have been talking about. That time has come for us to take personal responsibility for our immediate neighbourhood- on how we dispose of our waste and how we tend the neighbourhood in general.

He goes on;
"The Policy recognizes that healthy and hygienic behaviour and practices begin with the individual." And we agree.

Reading through the Policy, I realize that the Policy recognizes that about half of all preventable diseases and illnesses in Kenya are caused by poor sanitation, hygiene and water quality. These are issues that we can help address at personal levels in order to improve quality of our own lives.

We are inviting Kenyans to visit the offices of the Public Health Officers across Kenya and get for themselves a copy of this Policy. Let us make that initiative. But in the meantime, our Team will synthesize this Policy and bring it to you starting tomorrow.

The good thing is, we are bringing together a Team of 150 committed People to The 2nd Consultative Forum on Waste Management, and our deliberations will lead to Making Practical Steps towards Separation of Waste at Source, and more so, we will develop a Marshall Plan to help address the immediate challenges we are facing with Waste Management.

We are developing Clear Deliverables for The Forum and the good thing is, we will have Government Officers, Policy Makers and Technocrats whom we will engage in a Friendly Discussion on the Way Forward.

This Forum will not apportion blames. It will help to identify the Problem, propose the Solutions, and develop Time Lines for Implementation. Our resolve is, we MUST achieve a clean Kenya by 1st June 2013 as our Transformative Deliverable to our Motherland.

In the meantime, we are pleased that many Teams are coming from across the whole of Kenya to join with us in this Great Transformation. We only need 150 Delegates and shortly, we will stop giving accreditation.

The Clean Kenya Campaign would hence want to appreciate the following Teams for indicating that they will attend The Forum;
