More foreign doctors coming.The Ministry of Health and Social Services is eyeing the Federal Republic of Russia to provide more doctors in the near future.

Speaking during a meeting with the Kavango Regional Health Directorate's staff at Rundu yesterday, Health Minister Richard Kamwi said his ministry had  a critical shortage of skilled personnel, especially registered nurses and specialists.
For that reason, he and his team would visit Zambia, Tanzania and Russia before the end of the year to look for more doctors.
Namibia recently signed an agreement with Cuba, which will provide Namibia with 68 doctors.
To complement the University of Namibia (Unam)'s course in nursing, Kamwi said the health ministry would also offer a Diploma in Nursing.
That course will have an intake of 90 students per classroom, and will be offered at Keetmanshoop in the Karas Region, Windhoek in the Khomas Region and Rundu in the Kavango Region.
The Ministry's Health Training Centre for enrolled nurses will then be moved to Katima Mulilo in the Caprivi Region, Kamwi said.
He encouraged people to lobby prospective students with mathematics and science-related subjects to take up such courses, which he believed would close the skills shortages.
Kamwi also appealed to the regional health management team to ensure that all vacant posts of registered nurses are filled as soon as possible, even if it means recruiting expatriates because such posts have already been budgeted for by the ministry.
Before meeting with his staff, Kamwi consulted with the mayors of Rundu and Nkurenkuru to lobby for his ministry to be provided with serviced land.
The two councils assured him that land would be provided to the ministry in the near future.
Kamwi also said that funding is in the pipeline for the establishment of adistrict hospital at Nkurenkuru, 130km west of Rundu.
The Minister was accompanied by Permanent Secretary Andrew Ndishishi, Undersecretary Peter Ndaitwah and his special advisor, Dr Naftali Hamata. – Nampa
