Ride and Lift

The British say: I'm asking for a lift (in a vehicle)

Americans say: I'm asking for (or thumbing for) a ride

The British say:  Prostitute

Americans say:  Hooker

The British say:  CV

Americans say:  Resume

The British say:  A lift  (for going up or down building floors)

Americans say:  An elevator

Don't get me wrong here though; both the British and Americans understand the usages of these words from the context of the conversation. I'm just pointing out the words they respectively use the most in such contexts.

There are so many such words that whenever I'm talking to a new immigrant here I have to choose my words very carefully. We may end up speaking to each other in English but not understanding each other at all.
