THE Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have agreed a joint bid to co-host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.--
This was disclosed in Dar es Salaam by a TFF official, who preferred anonymity as he is not the official spokesman of the federation, saying that Tanzania has accepted Kenya's proposal to have a joint bid to host the continent's top soccer showpiece.
The official, however, noted that despite being ready to co-host the tournament with Kenya, the TFF still prefers Tanzania to be the sole host and the joint bid is an option.
"As Tanzania we have already submitted our bid to CAF (Confederation of Africa Football) and they have confirmed receiving it and the joint bid with Kenya consolidates our chances of
being granted the right to host the 2017 AFCON," he said.
The official also added that the bidding also has the blessing and support of the government. Another condition is that a hosting nation must have conducted one youth tournament before.
Earlier Kenya had proposed a plan for a joint bid with Tanzania and other regional neighbours - Uganda and Rwanda. Uganda and Rwanda football federations have reportedly accepted the offer but the TFF official denied the involvement of the other two countries, insisting that the joint bid is between Tanzania and Kenya.
In another development, more countries have presented their bid to host the 2017 AFCON tournament. Algeria are the latest following unsuccessful attempts to host the 2019, 2021 and 2023 editions.
This means Tanzania is facing a stiff competition not only from the North African nation, but also from more than half a dozen other candidates including Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Libya, who were to host the 2017 AFCON event pulled out because of the on-going political instability in the country that has led to delays in plans to construct stadiums.
Libya had hoped to build 11 stadia at a cost of 314 million US dollars to be able to host a successful event. CAF say that countries wishing to host the tournament have until September 30 to express their interest.
In addition to the government guarantee, the CAF Executive Committee will select a host country whose dossier guarantees that accommodation, transport and hotels facilities, as well as training sites and stadium already exist.
Another condition is that a hosting nation must have conducted one youth tournament before. The host country will be chosen at a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee in 2015.
Cameroon won the right to host the 2019 AFCON while Ivory Coast and Guinea were selected for the 2021 and 2023 editions respectively.
