[wanabidii] Positive reactions; Carelessness; a serious disease afflicting us

Friends,

This posting has elicited various comments and I want to share only two with you;
1. Mr. Peter Mathu- Athletics Coach in Thailand has suggested that we make all School and College going students be members of The Clean Kenya Campaign- and we do agree with this. We will pursue this with the relevant authorities.
2; Then Raziya Mohammed had the following suggestions;
  1. Water- Most of these 53 Markets do not have Water. What can you do to help them access water?
How about digging a well or a bore-hole? And when you finally do get a reliable water source, fix taps that discourage wanton wastage of this resource, i.e. install taps which need to be pressed for water like on trains, and when one lets go, the water stops.

  1. Electricity- Most of these 53 Markets do not have Electricity. What can you do to help them access Electricity?
There is a whole village in this country that runs on Wind Power, as there was a write up about it in one of our local dailies some time back. So, why not invest in an alternative supply like wind, solar or biodegradable garbage powering the place? After all, it's a market and therefore will be 'producing' a lot of biodegradable garbage with can be reused...., even for lighting! There is at least one farm in Eldoret which is run solely with this kind of energy. An added plus will be reduction in garbage, too, since most of it will be re-used to make energy:)
  1. Paint- Most of these Markets are not Painted. What can you do to help us paint these Markets?
I'm sure quite a few companies out there will be ready to donate paint, if nothing else to advertise their business, e.g. our various mobile phone companies.
  1. Carpeting- The floors to most of these Markets need re-Carpeting. How can you help?
Get our cement company/s to donate cabro bricks or give our local authorities a hefty discount. There are also many service outfits like Rotary and Lions who could also be approached to help or contribute something - both for recarpeting and water solution.
  1. Drainage- Most of these Markets have blocked Drainages. How best can you help us sort this small mess?
If we take care of our garbage and also the causes of blocked drainage, it will automatically not get blocked!!!!!!
What do you also think?

What must we do?

Friends,

Carelessness is the disease that is surely afflicting us as a Nation.

Many people do not care. We do not care how we elect our leaders.

We do not care what our children are instructed on in school.

We do not care how we take care of our neighbourhoods.

We do not care how we drive on our roads.

And sadly, we do not care when our neighbours are hurting.

I want to share 3 photos with you today. In this first photo, the residents of Mbotela in Nairobi do not care how and where they throw their waste;

Carelessness and lack of leadership in Mbotela

Yes, that's how most neighbourhoods are in our country, unfortunately, and the people don't even seem to mind living among the filth!!!

Then, we have this small breed of Kenyans who are paid to clean after our carelessness;

The City Council of Nairobi employee doing the most noble thing; making our Town Clean

Quite a thankless job, these poor cleaners have:(

Lastly, we have this massive group of Kenyans who believe that a Clean Kenya is possible, not just with the next leadership, but now;

Kenyans joining in working for a Clean Kenya. Otieno Sungu of The Clean Kenya Campaign leads through action at Kibera on the 8th September 2012

If, the average Kenyan would just continue NOT throwing stuff all over the place, the above would not need to be done at regular intervals...

Now, we can do better.

Following the successful hosting of The 2nd Consultative Forum on Waste Management on the 28th August 2012 at the KICC, many Teams and Groups from across Kenya have been reaching to us, appreciating what we are doing and offering that we partner with them in their various regions.

We are humbled by these emails and phone calls and it is with this in mind that we will be working with the Nairobi Market Traders Society, the City Council of Nairobi, the Provincial Administration, the Media and several other groups to help Clean all the 53 Markets in Nairobi on the 10th October 2012 in what we have dubbed; Massive Market Shut Down in Nairobi.

There are several things we want to do on this day, and your support and partnership, in whatever way, will be important.

The Markets are lacking in 5 Key Areas;

These are weighty issues that we must join hands and help sort out; the Councils, the Government, the Corporates, the Media and the People.

If you feel that you can help us make a difference, kwa vyo vyote vile, kindly get in touch and be part of The Clean Kenya Campaign Team.

Let us all work for a Clean Kenya as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50.
