[wanabidii] The Media can save us from this rot

Friends,

The Media must now save us from this rot and empty leadership we have across Kenya. We cannot pretend to be offering leadership yet, 50 Years into Independence we are still this badly off.

I would appreciate if you could read the letter below from Mr. Peter Mathu- Athletics Coach in  Thailand. I would also appreciate if you could read the enclosed from our Programmes Manager. We have more damning photos of how rotten Kenya is, and this reflects also on the kind of leadership that we have, from politics to the church, from schools to our homes, from clubs to our neighbourhoods.

We are simply lacking in leadership.

Thirdly, please read the following comments from Dr Paul Saoke; 'First it is important to note that Municpal waste in Kenya is a source of dangerous chemicals like dioxins and furans which are banned by the Stockholm Convention.  These are chemicals that are produced when waste containing plastics or bromide are burned.  Likewise incineration of waste or exposing these substances to heat does more harm.  In a study we conducted in 2008 we found the levels of dioxins in the eggs of free range chickens to be 28 times over the Tolerable limit set by WHO.  Dioxins are known to cause cancer, ischemic heart diseases, reproductive health problems inter alia.  There are studies which have been conducted in Kenya by NEMA and UNEP on the same. Municipal waste also contains heavy metals like mercury, cadmium and lead.  All these are known to cause various health problems that I would like to discuss when you next have a forum.  In the meantime I would want to request you to join the Global Anti-Incineration Alliance which addresses most of these issues from both environmental and scientific perspectives.  I believe that their approach is best suited and is informative on the many issues you are attempting to address.  They have many resources which you can refer to.  Visit their website at www.no-burn.org for more information and resources.
'

Who is offering any leadership here? Where are the Councils whose primary mandates are to keep our Towns and Estates Clean? Where are the enforcing agencies and what are they doing about the rotting Kenya?

Now, I want you to make your own judgement about The Clean Kenya Campaign and if you feel we are doing the bad thing, condemn us. If you feel we can all contribute and make Kenya Better, join us.

Lastly, there will be a raft of activities across Kenya in the next few days;
  1. Today the 18th Sept; Concern Worldwide is releasing their report on the Dandora Dumpsite and we will share the full report with you.
  2. Today the 18th Sept, we will be having a meeting with the Deputy Town Clerk at the City Council of Nairobi to help plan for our meeting with the Market Leaders tomorrow at Charter Hall and also to plan for the Massive Market Shut Down in Nairobi on the 10th October 2012.
  3. Tomorrow the 19th Sept, we will host Market Leaders from all the 53 Markets in Nairobi for a Planning Meeting that will be chaired by the Deputy Town Clerk CCN
  4. Tomorrow the 19th Sept, there will be a Massive Clean-up Campaign in Mombasa at Kisauni, Kongowea Wholesale Market, Mwakirunge, Nyali and Shanzu Beach
  5. On 25th Sept, we will be celebrating the life and times of the Late Wangare Maathai by launching Operation Clean Laini Saba in Kibera. This will be a 10 day massive programme and we are aiming at removing all that filth from the stream. Remember, I could not even take photos of what I was seeing. That is how bad the situation is.
  6. On the 28th Sept, we will have a Consultative Forum in Eldoret to help plan for the Clean up on the 19th October in Eldoret.
  7. On the 29th Sept, there will be a Peace Walk organized by the Christian Union students from Moi University at Langas in Eldoret
  8. And to close our Programmes for the Month, we will join with the residents of Kisumu on the 29th Sept for a Massive Clean up at Lwang'ni Beach.

These are deliberate efforts by Kenyans to help make Kenya Clean.

Kenyans are doing their part, now, we are demanding that the leaders show leadership. It does not make sense to crave so much for leadership and still have nothing to show case for it 50 years into Independence. This is why it is an affront to our intelligence as Kenyans when the Government spends such colossal sums of money to market Kenya and yet, situations like Laini Saba need on about Kshs 5m and it is sorted out once and for all.

All those who feel offended by the images that we are bringing to you, should rise up and join with us in The Clean Kenya Campaign. We are happy that the Campaign is becoming viral and on the 6th of December, we will be reviewing progress made so far across the Country as we appreciate Best Practices.

You are all invited to the Kitchen.

Let us all work for a Clean Kenya as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50.

Hi Odhiambo.

I think you are unearthing the hidden part of Kenya because what we are seeing is not expected to be in Nairobi but may be in another place.

The voters in this region participate fully to in election and they elect a leader who is supposed to serve them.

The same people contribute taxes just like any other Kenyan and even more than others because what they spend in day to day life is not spent by other advanced Kenyans. e.g Praffin and many other commodities like Matumbo and Buta

The people of Kibera pay rents to Land Lords who also contribute taxes to the City of Nairobi

Bwana Odhiambo I think the President and members of Parliament should be invited to Kibera and see by themselves what is happening there and i think the best person to communicate with is The Speaker of the National Assembly so that he can summon his group there and actually see if they can do something to the people of Kebera. i think we always say seeing is believing and i know with what you are doing they will come to our aid.. Please use all the news papers to convey your cries to the whole nation and Mps will hear..

Have a good Day those who montor your contributions knows that you are up to something and that is seeking  a good place for  us to live. .

Subject: Kibera Public Space Project 04

The Kibera Public Space Project 04 was launched on Saturday the 15th September 2012 by Mr. Hesbon Kayesi- District Officer Laini Saba when he presided over the Ground Breaking Ceremony in a function that was well attended.
The KPSP04 is an initiative of Kounkuey Design Initiative in partnership with local Community Based Organizations. KDI partners with residents of impoverished areas to create low-cost high-impact built environments-[Productive Public Spaces] that transform communities, improving the residents daily lives and future prospects and in the process, working towards a Clean Kenya.
This is the 4th site being reclaimed from Garbage and converted into a Productive Public Space by Kounkuey Design Initiative in Kenya. They also have a heavy presence in Haiti, Morocco and the US.
The KPSP04 was designed by two young architects- Michelle and Margaret under the watchful eyes of the KDI Team led by Joe Mulligan- the Country Director. I attended the Ground Breaking Ceremony and for the first time, I was scared of taking photos and sharing with the World.
We had parked about 500 metres from the site and what I saw was shocking. I have never seen people live in such desperate situation side by side with massive filth and yet, life goes on as if nothing is wrong. I have seen garbage sites across Kenya, but I have NEVER seen what I saw in Kibera. We are living as if there is no Government and this is unacceptable.
The Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation must move in and do something. This is a disaster we cannot let remain like this. The Ministry of Special Programmes must move in and save the situation. The National Youth Service and the Army MUST be mobilized to remove all this garbage from the streams in Kibera. And the City Council of Nairobi MUST do something. Then, the local leadership stands accused. They are a fraud on their subjects. We must hence unite efforts and sort out this mess. Living in a slum must not descend this low. We can live in the slums and still manage our waste effectively.
We must all get annoyed and help these colleagues who are living in such places. The part of Kibera that I visited is Pathetic. There is a complete breakdown of simple service delivery. Garbage is everywhere, toilets are dysfunctional, and where you have a pit latrine, it is full and messy. Yet, our people are forced by circumstances to live in such desperate situations.
Friends, we must all join hands and do something for this part of Kibera. There is no way we can all live happily and pretend that all is well. I will go back and help in mobilizing the Locals for action.
The Government Departments which are tasked with garbage collection must swing into action. Those who are tasked with sanitary care must roll their sleeves and we must remove all this piled up garbage clogging the rivers and the streams in Kibera. We must provide the people with alternatives and move proudly  as a team towards Vision 2030.
Otherwise, we will be failing in our duties by pretending that sections of Kenya can attain Vision 2030 at a time that basic service delivery is missing in some other section of Kenya.
Let us all work for a Clean Kenya as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50.
