SIPRI Yearbook 2014 launch event
 SIPRI Yearbook 2014, the 45th edition of the SIPRI Yearbook, will be officially launched at a special event at the OMM/WMO Building (7bis Avenue de la Paix) in Geneva. The findings from the Yearbook will be presented by SIPRI Director Dr Ian Anthony. In addition, SIPRI Programme Director Tariq Rauf and SIPRI Senior Researcher Pieter Wezeman will be in attendance to discuss specific aspects of non-proliferation and international arms transfers, respectively.
Sample sections from each of the chapters in SIPRI Yearbook 2014 are now available for download via the SIPRI website. Summaries of the Yearbook are also available in a number of languages. The full text of the Yearbook will be translated into Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Ukrainian. Find out more about the SIPRI Yearbook on the Oxford University Press website.

Violence against healthcare workers: Translating research into action
Complex security environments are beset by violence, armed conflict, extreme poverty and a lack of governance. While reliable access to healthcare is most needed in these settings, targeted violence against healthcare workers threatens its delivery. In this seminar, we discuss challenges in collecting data on the scope, nature, drivers and impacts of violence against health workers and how to effectively use this data for timely action.

On 7 October 2014 SIPRI Researcher Vincent Boulanin defended his PhD dissertation, entitled 'From Defence to Security: the diversification of European armament firms in the realm of security' (in French), at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris. Boulanin was awarded a PhD degree summa cum laude in political science.
SIPRI expert receives award from Russian non-governmental organization
On 4 October Tariq Rauf, Director of the SIPRI Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-proliferation Programme, received an award from the Russian Center for Policy Studies (PIR Center) in Moscow for 'strengthening the non-proliferation regime'. Other recipients were the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergey Ryabkov, the Head of the Center for International Security at IMEMO RAS, Alexei Arbatov, and Joby Warrick of the Washington Post.

Before the end of 2014 at least 50 states will have ratified the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), triggering its entry into force. While the ATT provides a loose framework for what these mechanisms will look like, many details remain undefined. Key decisions include agreeing the structure, tasks and funding mechanisms of the ATT Secretariat and templates for national reporting. This paper outlines the various options for key aspects of ATT implementation and draws relevant lessons from existing arms control and export control instruments. .
