Mr. Account et all,
Through long years working with local people as Business Woman, a Social Worker and a Politician; I have first hand exposure with long experience about what it means where most live scrambling through the nitty gritty for dear life among the poor when Government system is not functional and most are living without basic needs and at the same time, cost of living is constantly rising. Life must not stop because people squandered the opportunity for selfish reasons. Harambee became the norm...........
With due respect therefore, I take exception to fault you in matters of Harambee in Kenya and elsewhere in Africa. It is a noble behavior irrespective of who begun it, it has become a way of life that must be honored for a good cause. Since harambees filled the void and provided to close the gaps left without a cushion by the introduction of Structural Adjustment preceding with Privatization that was politically motivated by default, as a result, no meaningful Plan was secured or put in place to accommodate many of those who were rendered jobless from the restructuring of downsizing of employees in all economic sectors; Why Not, if the harambee spirit became the way to go!!! This was coupled with continued rising cost for commodities of most fundamental basic domestic needs, abusing rights that gave reason for respect, honor and dignity and which kept moral being of families together as well. As a matter of concern, Harambees was able to cushion, give hope and provided for those immediate basic needs required to harmonize peace and unity in most families and as such, most marriage institutions were saved for the sake of children security with upbringing receiving social amenities as needed. It became a way of life where people unite and come together to resolve a community's badly needed infrastructures to accommodate development that stopped coming in from the institutions that are endeared with the service delivery all the way from the World Bank, United Nations to Corporate Special Interests conspiring to hijack peoples livelihood and survival for selfish mission and this can be explained as follows:
1) Through Harambees 99.9.9.9% many women were able to provide a meaningful education for their children and many migrated abroad to study
2) Through Harambees 99.9.9.9% many urban and rural women institutionalized their local NGOs to run small scale business to subsist and provide for the already severed and punctured domestic account that fed, clothed, paid utilities offered most urgent basic needs for the family household, hospital prescriptions with medical bills were bought and paid
3) Through Harambees 99.9.9.9% the majority who died were able to be transported to their native homeland to given a descent and honorable burial
4) Through Harambees, 99.9.9.9% women and youth were able to improve their social interactiveness, shared and build capacity for engagement and participated effectively in Nation Building
5) Through Harambees 99.9.9.9% there were hope for success pulling together for change and funds realized from the harambees, politicians were able to navigate their way out of quagmires to where they are today
6) Through Harambees 99.9.9.9% people are able to navigate through to overcome political conspiracies meant to completely put a 6 inches nail in the coffin-box expected to destroy peoples livelihood and survival
7) Through Harambees, 99.9.9.9%people are able to reason together to fix and resolve roblem that face them as a community for lack of Government facility functionability………….until such time that Responsibility and Integrity for checks and balances shall be a yard-stick of an underlining factor to elect any politician in the public office.
However, to those politicians who enjoyed their families financial capability to gain an education, not all fell in the same category though, but atleast 99% of those from the well-off families were not able to succeed into politics without Harambees for instance. If they ever enjoyed the fruits of Harambees in one way or the other, then, they have no reason to cut the hands that fed them on matters of Harambee. It they are trying to find faults with it, then, again, they missed the point with those of their advocates……………….
Remember, the Industrial world was build from the resources from Africa and Africa was left to survive by the Grace of God, who sent Mana from Heaven to feed, clothe and provide for his creation on Earth. It is on this strength that those who benefited and built their wealth from African wealth and resources, it is time to give back……………and Harambee is not a bad thing therefore……………..it is where our unity of purpose for common good shall emanate moving forward.
Logical or illogical, Harambees will be here to stay for a little while until the institution of Governance with Just Rule of Law shall be fully established so that, Government institutions are able to deliver to the people as mandated and the system is seen functioning without a hitch, then the end of organized Poverty in Kenya with the rest of Africa shall end what Pan-Africanists had struggled for long time a go........"The Unity of Purpose" mutually shared for the common good of all..........and the conspiracy for terrorism in ways and means shall automatically end forthwith...........which is why, business must be done differently.........But for Now, and because Africans must remain alive and kicking, Harambee is a MUST DO Mr. Account et all.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers !!!

The idea is good, but the end results or outcomes are always bad. We know that harambee is not the best way to irradiate poverty. Harambee has been shouted in Kenya since old president Jomo Kenyatta started ruling Kenya. Do we still need it today. I think it is an old method and makes our stupid leaders and government to be much lazy. It also increases corruption and stealing of the national funds. Because the money which are supposed to be used for those things are being treated with harambee money? . It is also a direct exploitation. Since most people who contribute in harambee have already paid tax to the national treasure. So in away it is exploitation of the mass. We should not keep on feeding laziness and low IQ in our societies . I do not like harambee for long term functions. Harambee should be only used for acute with short term gain..harambee drives away brain motivation. It makes the brain to relax and ends up achieving very little in a human's life time.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said African countries must deal with poverty to combat terrorism. He was speaking yesterday during the African Union Peace and Security Summit at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
Uhuru said terrorists prey on unemployed youth because they are easy recruitment targets. "Terrorism and extremist violence is a threat to continental peace. Recruitment and radicalisation of vulnerable youth, especially through social media, is worrying," he said.
Uhuru criticised al Shabaab, who threaten East Africa and Boko Haram in Nigeria, Chad and neighbouring countries. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb poses challenges in the Sahel region that stretches across the southernmost extent of Northern Africa.
Uhuru said it is important for all countries to co-operate to wipe out terrorism. International terror groups target countries with weak border security , he said.
He urged governments to make anti-terror resources available despite help from the international community. "We must deny them the opportunity to divide us on the basis of religion and take serious measures against those aiding, hiding or cooperating with terrorists," Uhuru said.
Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan said the past decade has been characterised by terrorist attacks in the Sahel, Central African Republic and East Africa.
Jonathan said terrorism in Africa is worsened by organised crime like drug and human trafficking and illicit trade, which are used by terrorists to generate funds.
He urged African countries to share intelligence, border control policies and address underlying conditions that support terrorism. Chad President Idriss Deby, who is the chairman of the AU Peace and Security Council, said combating terrorism needs concerted efforts.
Representatives from the United Nations, the European Union, the League of Arab States and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council attended the meeting.
Saudi Arabia King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz donated $10 million (Sh870 million) to the African Union Peace and Security Council for the fight against terrorism.

Raila, Kidero face off over harambees

CORD leader Raila Odinga has clashed with Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero over fundraisers. The two differed on the importance of harambees at the weekend in separate functions in Homa Bay County. Kidero has maintained that he will engage in fundraising while his party leader is vehemently opposed to the exercise. According to Raila and his close allies, fundraising cannot bring any change in lives of Kenyans. Speaking in Rusinga Island, Mbita Constituency when he attended the burial of former Vice Chairman of Luo Council of elders John Anditi, Raila said there was no need for Kenyans to concentrate on fundraising. He maintained that it was only through devolution that Kenyans could realise economic prosperity. Raila said Kenyans' lives will be improved only if the devolved system of governance works well. He however said good operationalisation can only be achieved if more funds are devolved to counties.

He gave an example of former President Daniel Arap Moi's regime where he said several fundraisers were held but many regions ended up being underdeveloped. "If fundraising had the ability to develop Kenya, Moi could have left this country in a better state," he said. The CORD leader told President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto to stop concentrating in fundraisers and instead ensure that more money is devolved to counties. However, Kidero became defiant to calls by his party leader. Speaking on the same day during a fundraiser at Tonga Girls Secondary School in Suba Constituency, Kidero maintained that nobody should intimidate him to stop participating in fundraising. He maintained that Harambees were the only way through which various institutions and marginalised areas could get additional money for development. The Governor gave an example with schools in which he said the money allocated for development by the National government was too meager to enable achievement of the desired development projects. He also warned MPs and other political leaders who criticise him for his endeavours in fundraising to stop it for the sake of well being of Kenyans. "I want tell Kenyans that I am committed to enhancing their lives because this is one of the ways of getting supplementary funds for enriching marginalised regions. I will not be intimidated by anybody because I use my own funds in the exercise," Kidero said. Kidero has received criticism from some MPs in Homa Bay over his efforts to host fundraisers in South Nyanza region. TOPICS: CORD, RAILA ODINGA, EVANS KIDERO
