[wanabidii] General Pronunciation

Today I've decided to take a different angle to pronunciation. I want to try something else - how to pronounce names of places, especially countries.

Let's dispense with the introduction and get right into it. How do we pronounce names of countries and States?

Chile         -----   CH-I-L-E  

Uruguay    -----    U-R-U-G-U-A-I

Paraguay    ----    P-A-R-A-G-U-A-I

Ecuador      -----   E-K-W-A-D-O

Brazil          ------    B-R-A-Z-I-L  ( Locals say  B-R-A-S-I-l)

Argentina    -----     A-J-E-N-T-I-N-A  ( locals say A-GH-E-N-T-I-N-A)

(GH is a sound somewhere between a G and an H sound, a very soft G)

Cuba            ----     K-Y-U-B-A  (locals say  K-U-B-A)

San Juan       ---      S-A-N  H-U-A-N

Let's now try States in North America

Quebec (in Canada)   ----    K-E-B-E-K

Niagara                        -----    N-A-Y-A-G-R-A

Illinois                          -----     I-L-I-N-O-I

Iowa                             -----     A-Y-O-W-A

Arkansas                      -----     A-K-I-N-S-O

Kansas                         -----      K-A-N-S-A-S

Virginia                         ------      V-A-G-I-N-I-A

Maryland                       ------      M-E-R-I-L-A-ND

(Locals say P-A-R-I-S  but the R comes from the throat, not tongue)
