Department of State Resources to Encourage Spring Break Safety

Media Note
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
February 17, 2016

The safety of U.S. citizen travelers is a priority for the Department of State.  Regardless of destination, we encourage families and students to stay safe this Spring Break and read our tips for traveling abroad on travel.state.gov.

  • The Bureau of Consular Affairs will tweet out tips to remind U.S. citizens of what can go wrong during Spring Break and how to avoid problems.
  • Students can learn about Spring Break destinations at our website, state.gov, which has information on entry requirements, crime, health precautions, and road conditions.
  • Travelers should be aware of the health risks and safety risks of their destination and take steps to prepare ahead of time. For the most up-to-date information, U.S. citizens should visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This program keeps travelers up-to-date with important safety and security announcements, such as Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and security messages.

Of course, even well-prepared travelers may face an emergency, like a lost or stolen passport or an injury.  In those cases, our embassies and consulates are available to help 24/7. We encourage all U.S. citizen travelers to write down the contact information for the U.S. embassy or consulate in their destination country.

Members of the media who wish to speak about Spring Break safety resources with an official from the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs are encouraged to contact CAPRESSREQUESTS@state.gov.
