The United States recently issued a pledge outlining its commitments to human rights around the world. This pledge was made in the context of our candidacy for election to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), which will be held in November 2016 at the UN Headquarters in New York City. The United States is currently on a mandatory one-year hiatus after completing two three-year terms on the Council, and believes that its leadership was an important element of the Council’s improved focus on urgent human rights crises, promotion of universal human rights such as freedom of expression, and decreased fixation on Israel. The work of human rights never ends, and although the HRC is an imperfect body, it can and must be an effective tool in the promotion and protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms. The U.S. pledge - Human Rights Commitments and Pledges of the United States of America can be read in its entirety here: www.state.gov/p/io/humanrights |
