Ambassador William R. Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, will travel to Panama and Guatemala September 15-20. In Panama, he will meet with President Juan Carlos Varela to discuss bilateral security and justice issues. Ambassador Brownfield will visit United States government-funded rule of law projects in Panama including a joint Panama-Colombia security forces base in the Darien. This project highlights the commitments of the governments of Panama, Colombia, and the United States to combat transnational crime and improve citizen security. Ambassador Brownfield will also deliver a speech highlighting U.S. counter narcotics security assistance in the region ahead of his visit to Guatemala. In Guatemala, Ambassador Brownfield will lead the U.S. delegation to a Special General Assembly of the Organization of American States that will focus on drug policy in the hemisphere. The United States looks forward to engaging on the issue to improve the health, safety, and well-being of all citizens of the Americas. While in Guatemala Ambassador Brownfield will also visit U.S.-funded security and community-based programs and meet with local and national level officials on bilateral issues, including the migration of unaccompanied children to the United States from Guatemala.
