Justifying its decision to demonetise Rs 500, Rs 1,000 currency notes, the government told the Supreme Court on Thursday that the measure would stamp out black money and fake notes, being pumped in by Pakistan, and help the poor and middle class.

Two variants of the new Rs 500 note surface
TOI found at least three case studies where the new notes have been found to vary from one another. RBI spokesperson said: “It is likely that notes with printing defect has got released due to the current rush. However, people can freely accept such a note in transaction or return it to RBI.”
Exchange of scrapped Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes ends
Over-the-counter exchange of high value notes, which were scrapped earlier this month, will stop from Friday, the government announced on Thursday. However, it also extended use of the Rs 500 note for some specific purposes up to December 15.
