Press Releases: U.S. Deeply Concerned by Ongoing Violence in the Central African Republic 10/10/2014 05:02 PM EDT U.S. Deeply Concerned by Ongoing Violence in the Central African Republic Press Statement Marie Harf Deputy Department Spokesperson, Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC October 10, 2014 The United States is deeply concerned by ongoing incidents of violence in the Central African Republic. This violence must stop immediately. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and Government of Pakistan for the Pakistani peacekeeper killed in the recent violence, as well as to the Government of Pakistan and the Government of Bangladesh for their injured peacekeepers. We thank the personnel and leadership of MINUSCA, EUFOR, and the French forces for their crucial work to calm the violence and reiterate our call on the United Nations to make every effort to ensure the rapid and full deployment of MINUSCA’s military, police, and civilian staff. We call on all Central Africans to halt the cycle of violence and retribution that has disrupted economic and political life and created a humanitarian crisis. All leaders, including leaders of armed groups, must work together with the Transitional Government led by Catherine Samba-Panza to advance the political transition process and grassroots and national dialogues agreed to in the July 23 Brazzaville agreements and to do so in an inclusive manner. The United States reiterates its strong support for the efforts of President Samba-Panza to bring an end to violence and restore stability to the Central African Republic. Toward that end, we call on all leaders in the Central African Republic to send a clear message: violence and calls for a change of government must stop. This is the time to begin the hard work of national reconciliation that can lead to a political transition and democratic elections. We condemn those political spoilers and human rights abusers who foment and commit violence; such individuals have no place in the political future of CAR or in positions of trust. We call on the CAR authorities to investigate all incidents of violence against civilians and to hold perpetrators accountable. We stand with the people and leaders of CAR as they seek to end the violence and bring peace, stability, and security to CAR.
