Budget 2016: It's bad news for the 'rich' as govt shifts focus
Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday made a strong push to counter the "suit-boot ki sarkar" tag conferred on the government by Rahul Gandhi by unveiling a Budget that focussed on wooing farmers and the poor while conspicuously soaking the "rich".
Does the budget leave you better or worse off?
With no change in the basic slabs, exemptions or tax rates but several tweaks in exemptions, the answer will depend on who you are and what your income is.

World Wildlife Day Event: "Voices for the Wild: From Inspiration to Action on Combating Wildlife Trafficking"

On Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Catherine A. Novelli will host “Voices for the Wild: from Inspiration to Action on Combating Wildlife Trafficking” to celebrate World Wildlife Day. The event will convene prominent filmmakers, producers, artists, and other wildlife storytellers for a panel discussion focusing on strategies for engaging the public in combating illegal trade in wildlife. The discussion will include a sneak preview of the first Annual Progress Assessment of the U.S. National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking, an interagency report that will officially be released on March 3.

A new partnership with the Jackson Hole Film Festival and the International Elephant Film Festival will be announced that will facilitate screenings of award-winning films about wildlife trafficking issues at U.S. embassies for audiences in source, transit, and demand countries. A partnership will also be announced with the Association for Zoos and Aquariums for a series of “Zoohackathons” to be held August 19-20, 2016, which will bring tech solutions to demand reduction and encourage alternative sources of income, such as wildlife-based tourism, for local communities.

The event will conclude with – a first for the State Department – projected images of wildlife, including many threatened species, on the Harry S. Truman building’s C Street façade. The visual event is in partnership with Discovery Communications, Vulcan Productions, and the documentary film Racing Extinction. The goal is to raise awareness of, and spur action on the global threat of wildlife trafficking. Members of the public are able to view the projection show starting at 6:20 p.m. at 22nd Street in front of the State Department.

Panel Discussion

The panel discussion is open to the press.

Pre-set time for cameras is 2:30 p.m. from the 23rd Street entrance. Final access time for writers and stills is 2:45 p.m. from the 23rd Street entrance.

Wildlife Projections

The wildlife projections are open to the press at the C Street entrance.

Pre-set time for cameras is 5:30 p.m. at the C Street entrance. Final access time for writers and stills is 6:00 p.m. at the C Street entrance.

Media representatives may attend these events upon presentation of one of the following: (1) A U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification card (driver's license, passport).
