[wanabidii] Re: Zambia presidential by-election - January 20, 2015 - Uchaguzi wa Rais Zambia - Januari 2015

TRANSPARENCY International Zambia has implored Zambians to choose a leader with integrity and desire to confront corruption. In a statement, TIZ president Lee Habasonda stated the nation wanted to see renewed commitment to the fight against corruption which had become pervasive in all sectors of the national life. "We are concerned that while the electoral hype is at its peak, little is being said about eliminating corruption in our country. Corruption in our country is a cancer that requires a leadership with commitment and the right motivation to fight," he stated. Habasonda stated that there was need for Zambia to place the country's leadership in the hands that would stem the tide of corruption that had become endemic in business and social life. "This election should be an opportunity for our people to redefine our nationhood towards higher values of national wellbeing, development, unity and not use of favours, connections or base instincts to succeed. Merit, pragmatism and track record of aspiring candidates is crucial to this redefinition of our nationhood," he stated. Habasonda also advised political leaders to accept the outcome of today's election. "We further urge our political parties to understand that in a democracy, there are always winners and losers and hence both outcomes are a possibility. It is, therefore, crucially important for our political parties to remember that we all belong together despite our differences in terms of beliefs, origins, affiliations and statuses," he stated. Habasonda called on Zambians to maintain their record as a beacon of peace. - See more at: http://postzambia.com/news.php?id=5509#sthash.wRW0IbSR.bnOohrov.dpuf

DR. GUY SCOTT PAYS SURPRISE VISIT TO MR. PRICE MANDA HILL AFTER RECEIVING REPORTS WORKERS WHERE NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE;

Acting President and the man who has glued Zambia together in the build up to today's watershed election Dr. Guy Scott paid a surprise visit to clothing store Mr. Price in Lusaka after he received reports workers had been dens-franchised.

The Acting President, who had issued a directive to all employers countrywide to allow their workforce to participate in todays election walked through the store much to the surprise of management.

But one of Mr Price senior personnel refuted the claims that their workers have been stopped from voting.

He explained that the first group went to cast their votes and the rest will go at 14 hrs

Here Dr. Scott casts his ballot.

ELECTORAL COMMISSION OF ZAMBIA (ECZ) OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESULTS CENTRE

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Presidential election results centre has been officially launched at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.

The ECZ results centre will be used by the commission to announce Presidential results received from various districts across the country.

The launch was attended by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country representative, Ms. Janet Rogan, local and foreign election monitors and members of participating political parties.

ECZ Chairperson Justice, Irene Mambilima said the launch of the centre is an important milestone in the preparations for this year's Presidential election.

And Justice Mambilima said the commission is ready to conduct a free and fair Presidential election.

"The Commission would like to assure the nation and all stakeholders that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure that tomorrow's President election is held in a transparent and secure environment." She said.

STATEMENT BY INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE

As the Campaign period for the forthcoming presidential by- election comes to an end today, 19th January, 2015 at 18:00 hours, all political parties taking part in the election are advised to stop all campaign activities as provided for in the Electoral Act and Electoral Code of Conduct.

Immediately after 18:00 hours today, all campaign activities will be treated as illegal and all those that will be found campaigning will be arrested and charged accordingly.

We will be on the look out for people who will attempt to disrupt the electoral process or any procedure that may follow there after such as the inauguration ceremony.

As police we will remain vigilant and we are not going to allow anyone to destabilize peace in whatever manner at any stage of the election. We have placed both uniformed and plain clothed police officers in strategic places to prevent such plans from being executed.

We are further reminding the general public that carrying of offensive weapons in public is an offense and anyone found wanting will be arrested. Officers have been directed to conduct random searches on persons and motor vehicles which they suspect to be carrying offensive weapons.

We call upon all political players to continue preaching messages of peace and discourage acts of violence which have potential to breed anarchy.

We are re-assuring members of the public of their safety throughout the election period and we are urging them to report all persons or groupings conducting themselves in a manner that may lead to the breach of peace to officers nearest to them.

I also want to warn persons who want to take advantage of the situation to obtain police uniform for use as security officials during the polls day that the police will not hesitate to arrest them as this is an offense under section 6(1)(a) of Cap 111 of the laws of Zambia.

INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE

With only three days remaining before the Presidential election we can proudly state that our campaign has been a truly national campaign; launching and finishing in Lusaka we have travelled the length and breadth of the country.

We have not just kept to the towns and urban areas, and we have not just campaigned to those who are already part of our established support base. Rather, we have tirelessly continued on the campaign route so as to deliver our message to as many Zambians as possible in person, so that they can make an informed decision on 20 January 2015.

We have been making the most of every minute available to us to campaign, just as we intend to use every minute available to us to deliver for the Zambian people if elected to State House.

Our campaign travels have reinforced to us that many of the issues facing Zambians across the country are the same: the high cost of living, limited employment opportunities, inadequate and costly education and healthcare, and the source of these problems - a lack of leadership and vision. We propose to address these challenges with the upmost urgency.

In delivering our message to Zambians across the country over the past ten weeks, the foundation of everything we have championed has been national unity and moving forward together. Do not let those who seek to distract us from the real issues with talk of divisive matters such as tribalism succeed. We know that only by working together can we deliver truly transformative change for Zambians, regardless of their age, gender or tribe. This is the very reason why we have opened our arms to all Zambians during the campaign.

When we have been sharing our vision, whether at public debates in Lusaka, rallies in Chipata, radio interviews in Kasama, or market tours in Chingola, we have been talking not about delivering change for one province or another, or one tribe or another. We have been talking about delivering change for the farmers who have not been paid and are struggling to afford inputs for next season, for the nurses that work in tough conditions and were unceremoniously sacked, for the students who cannot afford to go to university or even school, and for every Zambian who is suffering from the consequences of failed leadership.

Ultimately we respect that the choice is with the Zambian people on 20 January 2015.

Hakainde Hichilema
UPND President
